The Whistle-Stop Cafe opens in Indooroopilly

While this quaint locale set off the main streets of Indooroopilly may be tucked away next to the train station, The Whistle-Stop Cafe appears a world away – a quiet and peaceful space.

Inside this new western-suburbs spot, green, orange and yellow cushion-topped chairs stand out cheerily against crisp white walls. Visitors can sip their coffee amongst the dappled window lighting or take to a striped lounge indoors while, through the rear door, a lush garden of veggies and herbs surrounds the outdoor seating area.

Everything on the breakfast, lunch and kids menus is made in-house, with owner James Macdonald-Buchanan passionate about seasonal locavore eating. Using ingredients from a number of local producers, including Glenrouse Bio-dynamic Eggs, Sol and Wild Breads, Barambah Organics and Lick Ice-Cream, The Whistle-Stop Cafe aims to source produce from within a 150 km radius of Brisbane. Toasted Muesli with Rhubarb & Apple Compote and Yoghurt graces the breakfast menu, along with crepes folded with lemon curd or house strawberry jam and thick cream. At lunch gnocchi is served with burnt butter and smoked almonds before being tossed with a selection of greens and herbs picked straight from the garden.

Amongst the sweet offerings, the Peanut Butter, Chocolate and Pistachio Cookie caught our eye, while a sole remaining slice of homemade apple pie at only 11:00 am speaks for itself. A variety of tea leaves rest in individual jars, coffee cups are brightly coloured to match the cushions, and homemade lemonade and organic ginger beer beckon those in need of a thirst quencher.
