The round-up: Brisbane’s best pies

Forget your run-of-the-mill lukewarm servo pie – a real pie is a thing of beauty. Comfort food doesn’t get much more comforting than a great pie. Here is our list for must-try pies – you’ll never look at a Four’N Twenty the same ever again.

Piefection, Coorparoo and Mount Gravatt: It’s pretty ballsy to proclaim that your pies are perfect, but Matt Roman knows what he is doing and after trying the goods from Piefection we are having a hard time finding any faults. The Jack Daniels BBQ pork-rib pie is a must-try, but you can’t go wrong with any choice here.

Yatala Pies, Yatala: This one’s a classic. Every trip to or from the Gold Coast is made infinitely better by a stop at Yatala Pies. For more than 130 years this pie shop has been cranking out thousands of golden-crusted beauties for us to enjoy and for that we sincerely thank them.

The Pie Hole, various locations: Market-based pastry royalty The Pie Hole offers up a killer range of both sweet and savoury pies. If you’re after a savoury fix specifically, then we suggest sampling the kimchi-braised chicken pie, pulled-pork and apple pastries, vegetable pies and red wine-braised brisket pie.

Hellcat Maggie, Brisbane City: Brisbane City’s grungy laneway hangout spot offers a worldly range of fare, but pie lovers can do away with most of it – it’s the beef rib pot pie that you’ll want to try. Served with mushy peas and a roasted vegetable medley, fans of classic hearty pies will really get a kick out of this one.

Jocelyn’s Provisions, Fortitude Valley: James Street’s home of sweets also boasts a strong savoury selection, which includes crusty pies fit for one or the whole family. Lamb and rosemary, beef and red wine, chicken and mushroom – flavours you simply cant resist.

Beefy’s, various locations: With a name like Beefy’s, you just know that the pies are going to be something special. With locations in Cannon Hill, North Lakes and all the way up through the Sunshine Coast, there are plenty of stops for anyone on a road trip north. The signature steak pie shares menu space with Thai green curry, chicken and vegetable and curried steak.

Muzza’s Gourmet Pies, Coorparoo: The name Muzza has become synonymous with excellent pastries, and the pies are all the proof you need to certify this spot’s reputation. If variety is a barometer of quality, then wait until you get a load of Muzza’s range! Steak and cheese, mince curry, broccoli, cauliflower and cheese, chicken tandoori, chicken with brie and asparagus and classic chunky steak are just a few of the pastry parcels on offer.

Story Bridge Hotel, Kangaroo Point: If you ask us, the humble pub pie needs to make a comeback. The Story Bridge Hotel is championing the cause with the signature pie selection at its Shelter Bar, with a classic beef and Guinness pie featuring slow-braised beef, caramelised onions and garlic. This eatery also rotates through a new pie every day, so fans of variety have plenty to enjoy.

Finn McCool’s, Fortitude Valley: The Irish know how to do a good pie, and Finn McCool’s is your best bet for getting your hands on a good one. The beef and Guinness pie features Guinness gravy, colcannon mash and peas.

Syd’s Pies, Loganholme: Loganholme is a haven for pies, and Syd’s Pies are well worth investigating if you are ever passing through. This dispensary is often entered into The All Australian Meat Pie Competition, so the quality is high. Savoury or sweet, Syd’s got them all.

Golden King Bakery, Ashgrove: If you can tear yourself away from Golden King Bakery’s banh mi offering, you’ll notice that its crispy pie selection is stellar as well. The likes of plain chunky steak, tomato with steak, chicken and vegetable and potato-top pies are available, with a delicious golden pastry crust proving irresistible.

Gisler’s Roadside Pie Cafe was one Brisbane’s first pie spots when it opened in 1976, with the Burbank location standing the test of time thanks to its killer array of pastry parcels. With the addition of a food truck and another pie spot in Cleveland, there are several chances to get your fix of Gisler’s signature pies, including flavours such as bacon and cheese, curry steak, steak and pepper, and its enormous loaded pies.

Pie Time, Sumner Park and Woodridge: This outlet’s mantra is that it is pie time all the time, and we agree! Boasting two locations in Sumner and Rocklea is a humble pie chain that goes all out when it comes to creating tasty pie varieties. Pie Time is known to shake things up with its monthly specials – which has included steak and beer – and its signature pies such as the Ned Kelly.
