The round-up: where to find the best fried chicken in Brisbane

Put down the KFC bucket – no matter how many secret herbs and spices are sprinkled on top, the best fried chicken in Brisbane cannot be found at a fast food joint. Fried chicken is the ultimate comfort food and is exponentially better when made with love and care. Several locales in town are known for crunchy wings and flavoursome fillets, so if you only settle for the best, you are going to want to put these places to the test.

Lucky Egg, Fortitude Valley: If you are in the Valley and are hankering for some delicious fried chicken you simply can’t go past Lucky Egg. This humble outfit started life in a shipping container, but has blossomed into one of the entertainment precinct’s most popular eateries. Lucky Egg makes some of the tastiest chicken burgers (the Original Crispy is heavenly) and wings in town, with some wickedly good slaw and extras to fill in the gaps.

Seoul Bistro, Sunnybank: Fans of finger-lickin’ fried chicken go clucking mad for the eats at Sunnybank’s Korean- and Japanese-inspired joint Seoul Bistro. The venue’s famous chicken wings are a must-try item, with seven signature sauces to choose from in addition to crispy chicken karaage, buttermilk tenders and karaage curries. If you’ve got a particularly large hankering for wings, Seoul Bistro’s buffet gives diners the chance to enjoy unlimited wings, thin-cut fries, garlic bread and lemon iced tea.

NeNe Chicken, Brisbane City: Few countries can top Australia’s boundless love for fried chicken but South Korea is definitely one of them. NeNe’s menu features fried chicken in abundance, with nine flavour varieties at your fingertips plated up in piles of wings, tenders and drumsticks, or served in burgers or wraps.

Fat Belly Jacks, Petrie Terrace: Fat Belly Jack’s is an American-inspired bar that specialises in Nashville-style hot chicken – the kind that makes your lips tingle! Select from southern-fried chicken burgers, breasts, thighs, wings or tenders, then ratchet up the spice from mild, to medium, red hot and ‘really f$!king hot’.

KaiKai Chicken, St Lucia: KaiKai Chicken has brought us something a little different when it comes to chicken – a Korean. Fried. Chicken. Buffet. For a set price you can loosen your pants for a buffet of unlimited fried chicken lathered in Korean, American and Southeast Asian-inspired flavours.

Hello Chicken, Bowen Hills: South Korea strikes again with King Street’s Hello Chicken. This small venue packs a big punch in terms of flavours, cooking up five kinds of chicken including soy garlic chicken, Korean chilli chicken, snow cheese chicken and crazy-hot chilli chicken.

WingFix, Morningside: This fried-chicken dispensary started life as a food truck, earning legions of fans with its classic American-style chicken wings. The bricks-and-mortar location is a great spot to get your fix of classic buffalo wing, garlic parmesan, honey-soy Korean fried chicken and crispy fried wings, as well as a selection of burgers.

Lord of the Wings, Carindale and Indooroopilly: Leave it to an operation called Lord of the Wings to deliver on variety. Fried-chicken fanatics should categorise this spot as a must-try destination if only for the selection of sauces. Lord of the wings serves 20 sauce options ranging from sweet honey pomegranate to buffalo suicide hot, which means you can come back regularly to mix things up.

Shady Palms, Stones Corner: StoCo locals love Shady Palms for it’s eclectic vibe and great selection of drinks, but we love it for the fried chicken. The southern-fried buttermilk chicken comes served with beer battered onion rings or mac n cheese, while the Shady Wings come with sage mayo and your choice of coating – BBQ bourbon glaze, spicy buffalo or cajun spiced.

Greaser, Fortitude Valley: This secluded bar is popular for its menu of cheese burgers, fries and hot dogs, but you’d be remiss to pass up trying the amazing buttermilk fried chicken. Order a piece, half a bird or a whole bird and enjoy it with some red eye gravy and smoked chipotle mayonnaise.

Momo Chicken and Beer, Runcorn and Brisbane City: Fried-chicken lovers have been flocking to Momo’s locations in Runcorn and Brisbane City for arguably some of the best crispy chick in town, and it’s easy to see why. There are ten kinds of fried chicken to choose from, from classic and marinated pieces through to boneless sets in addition to giant chicken cutlets, chicken noodle soup, chicken curry and chicken salad.

Hot Star, Sunnybank: Fried chicken doesn’t come as simply or as tastily as Hot Star. If you’ve got a hankering for some Taiwanese-style oversized crispy chicken then the only course of action is to head to Sunnybank as soon as possible. While gigantic pieces of fried chicken is king here, the menu is also stuffed with smaller bites to add if you’ve got a giant hunger.

Bird’s Nest Yakitori & Bar, West End and Fortitude Valley: While predominantly a yakitori-style chicken joint, Bird’s Nest also dishes up authentic Japanese bites such as deep-fried chicken thigh karaage with wasabi mayonnaise and the crispy fried-chicken burger.

Tippler’s Tap, South Bank and Fortitude Valley: Few things go better together like chicken and beer, and Tippler’s Tap has got the goods for both. Grab a beer or two and share a basket of Tippler’s Chicken Wings, dry spice-rubbed and served with blue cheese sauce, or go to town on the Chicago-style fried-chicken burger with pickle-brined fillets served with Swiss cheese, lettuce and jalapeno aioli.

4Fingers Crispy Chicken, Brisbane City and Chermside: Singaporean out 4Fingers Crispy Chicken made a splash on the chicken scene with two locations opening in quick succession. Diners have become enamoured with the 4Fingers hormone-free selection, which includes chicken-katsu burgers, wings and drumettes painted with preservative-free sauces, chicken and rice boxes, and more.

Ze Pickle, Fortitude Valley: If you need to get your mitts around a burger, ditch the beef and head to Ze Pickle for a bite of the Southern Hick (crispy fried chicken, maple smoked bacon, jack cheese) or the K F ZE (crispy fried chicken, smoked jalapeños, IPA beer cheese sauce and slaw). Still hungry? Cop a serve of chicken waaangs, man!

Zero Fox, Teneriffe: This Teneriffe craft-beer bar boasts a range of Japanese bites, but you should absolutely cop a basket of crispy chicken wings, available with or without a coating of wet and spicy sauce.
