Dine trackside at hidden gem The Precinct at St Leger

This is a public service announcement – did you know you can visit Eagle Farm Racecourse outside of race and market days? Admittedly, before now there wasn’t much reason to go, but a little hidden cafe is here to change that.

The Precinct at St Leger has just opened inside the racecourse, tucked beneath the historic trackside St Leger stand. Don’t be shy – at first it might be intimidating to drive through those iconic wrought-iron gates – but once you make your way through, The Precinct is easy to find. The cafe is the first of what is to be a number of dining spots inside the Eagle Farm precinct, as part of Mirvac’s $850-million residential and lifestyle project. Positioned beneath the stand, it has an almost bunker-like feel, but is illuminated by natural light streaming in from the wide doors that open to the track. You’ll be able to get a perfect view from the cafe on racedays, however if you pop in early on any given day you’re likely to get a sneak peek at the horses’ morning training trot around the turf.

The Precinct at St Leger is the latest project from the family behind Teneriffe’s Wilde Kitchen, who are also the creators of Paleo Hero Primal Foods. Although its previous ventures have a paleo focus, The Precinct caters for a much broader crowd. Paleo, gluten-free and dairy-free options are of course available on the all-day menu (think paleo lasagne and raw treats), but you’ll also find comfort-food delights such as a croque monsieur, weekly burger specials and Nepalese coconut chicken curry. On Eagle Farm Markets days (the cafe neighbours the market site), The Precinct will offer a special grab-and-go cabinet menu, featuring the likes of a Mexican-inspired breakfast bowl and chicken schnitzel burger with Swiss cheese, house-made sriracha, mayonnaise and spinach.
