The grill is hot and the beer is cold – The Montague Hotel is ready and waiting. The newest face in the inner-south pub scene is revitalising the game with an approach that stays true to the casual classics while providing a slick contemporary spin. If haloumi fries, burgers and preservative-free beer sound like your kind of bag, West End’s newest haunt is going the full Monty.

The corner pub is as Australian as a Bunnings snag, John Williamson singing ‘True Blue’, and Vegemite – it’s almost a crime that Brisbane doesn’t boast a watering hole on every street. West End’s newest resident The Montague Hotel is a gastropub that is looking to turn Brisbane’s pub culture on its head with a modern approach to casual dining. The Monty, as it’s colloquially known (see, already a local), is drawing in punters in droves with the promise of frosty beverages and a menu of pub favourites with a tasty spin. The spacious lot sits on the corner of Montague Road and Kurilpa Street, featuring a wrap-around balcony, plenty of seating and dining space inside and outside, and what can only be described as a bar well worthy of your patronage.

Don’t get it twisted – The Monty is more than just a pub. It’s a dining destination that seeks to elevate pub fare with a culinary flair that belies the casual atmosphere. The menu features a host of familiar flavours such as cheeseburgers, pizzas, schnitzels, fish and chips, char-grilled steaks and sides, but it’s the new tastes we are excited about. The charcoal rotisserie offers up juicy morsels of Greek-style lamb and marinated pork, while a nutritionist-vetted superfood offering encompasses rainbow wraps, seed salads, Swiss mushroom burgers and a host of salads. Slim Dusty famously sang, “what a terrible place, is a pub with no beer.” Don’t fret – there will be no shortage of cheer at The Monty. The bar is amply stocked with an extensive selection of spirits, wines and 17 premium and craft beers on tap – including a special preservative-free draught from the brewery fresh copper beer tank. Also worth noting, The Monty is also brewing its own coffee blend, for those that need a different kind of pick-me-up.
