Unwind with wine and charcuterie at New Farm’s The Long Road Bar & Eatery
The trudge through the working week is similar to hiking down a long, dusty road – it’s always nice to have something to look forward to at the end of it. New Farm’s The Long Road Bar & Eatery is a charming new respite location to cure your ailments and soothe your stresses with an on-point combination of cured meat and international wines.
When Melbourne transplants Leslie McLauchlan and Christopher Tope moved to Brisbane, it was with a vision of making good on their long-held dream of opening a bar and restaurant that they could call their own. The hospitality veterans have moulded their interpretation of casual fine dining to suit the Brisbane scene with The Long Road Bar & Eatery – a new restaurant that occupies a stylish workers cottage on Brunswick Street in New Farm. The space (which once housed Gaslight Bistro) has been modified with a new kitchen and a retiled bar, complementing the timber deck – perfect for catching balmy breezes – to create an approachable and relaxed atmosphere while remaining refined in attitude.
The Long Road’s head chef Phoebe Mille has worked with Leslie and Christopher to help realise their dream menu, which draws inspiration from the Southern European and Mediterranean regions of Portugal, France and Spain for a simple and structured offering. To serious carnivores’ delight the key focus is charcuterie, with upwards of ten meat varieties listed at any one time. We’re talking tasty morsels like iberico bellota puro from Spain, Australian sobrasada and chorizito cured on site, as well as a curated selection of cheeses. The goodness doesn’t stop there – The Long Road also serves up small share plates offering the likes of herb-crusted calves liver, tuna ceviche, Hervey Bay scallops and pork scratchings. An impeccable wine list has been assembled to pair with the fare, boasting drops from Portugal, the Rhone Valley, Chablis and several of Australia’s best wine-growing regions. The coming weeks will see beer taps installed, pouring a range of brews that are perfect to enjoy while watching the world pass by from the front deck.
