The Little Prince Espresso opens at Princess Theatre, Woolloongabba
The Little Prince Espresso has opened in the front-of-house space of the majestic Princess Theatre in Woolloongabba. The creation of mother-son duo Bev and Kristian Watkinson, The Little Prince has history woven into every crevice of its existence.
Children’s book The Little Prince was Kristian’s favourite read growing up, and he has always called his two sons ‘little princes’. So it seemed fate stepped in when Kristian was looking for a location to open a cafe, delivering him a space under the historic Princess Theatre.
Sections of exposed brick show several layers of plaster that have built up over the centuries since the theatre opened in 1888, while the counter has been crafted from recycled floor boards and benches from Bev’s (now-renovated) kitchen. A group of friends helped kit out the cafe over 36 hours one recent weekend, doing it for the love and instilling that feeling of generosity into the cafe.
Turning his passion for coffee into a full-time gig, Kristian worked at Alberto’s Shot in West End before making The Little Prince a reality. Open early for the tradies, The Little Prince serves up Cup Coffee, sweet treats and light meals that move from morning to lunch, allowing people working at and visiting the hospital a haven to escape to and zone out for a while.
