When the pulse of the city streets proves too much and your head and heart need a break from the bustle, Brisbane’s suburbs offer a treasure trove of laid-back venues and cosy retreats. After opening late last month, The Hyde Out Bar & Eatery is proving popular with those seeking shelter and a shared platter or a tropical smoothie. Building owners Brooke and Spencer Lambert watched new businesses come and go in the Hyde Road allotment over the past few years, and finally decided to bite the bullet and open up their ideal locale alongside co-owners Dianne and Mick Bain.

Ease into the day with a cup of Belaroma Coffee and chef Andrew McCabe’s nourishing fare. Open from morning ‘til night, this suburban sanctuary dishes up breakfast, lunch and dinner, while also selling newspapers, milk and Le Sebastian Bakery bread to locals in need. The daily specials chalked up on the blackboard could include the likes of Southern-style pulled pork tucked inside a garlic-infused roll with coleslaw and rosemary fries, while the printed menu boasts repasts like slow-roasted five-spiced duck on a coconut coriander rice cake with steamed gai lan, and twice-cooked coffee-infused pork belly with sweet and spicy Asian ‘slaw. A rotating selection of craft brews and local wines will mix it up on the taps, while communal cocktails like the Shalang-alang are finished with a scoop of lime sorbet and served in teapots and mason jars.

Pop by The Hyde Out on a lazy Sunday afternoon for live music and tapas dishes like garlicky edamame finished with sea salt or Tuscan-style wagyu meatballs with grilled parmesan bread.
