We can’t lie, returning to the daily grind after the recent festive period required some exceptionally strong coffee. If you’re still dragging your feet into 2020 thanks to some post-holiday blues, brand-new specialty coffee nook The Hideout might have just the thing to put a spring in your step. Opening today, Monday January 13, The Hideout is pouring brew using beans from some of Australia’s finest roasters, and is shaping up to be the kind of cafe that makes you look forward to going to work.

As specialty coffee becomes the norm across Brisbane’s cafe scene, sippers are gradually becoming more particular about the brews they choose for their morning jolt. Brisbane City’s newest specialty coffee-oriented joint The Hideout is catering to these niche tastes by assembling a formidable line-up of roasters for its trade debut. The brains behind the chic cafe – Dae Kang and Eddie Cho – are a couple of savvy cafe veterans passionate about spearheading the specialty coffee culture across Brisbane’s CBD. Eddie, formerly a top coffee slinger at Dae’s Creek Street caffeination station The Common Room, has linked up with Dae as co-owner of The Hideout, which is situated at the base of 340 Adelaide Street. The duo snagged the space after the building’s lobby had been freshly renovated, leaving a blank canvas that suited Dae and Eddie’s vision of a minimalist-yet-lively Melbourne-inspired espresso bar. The nook’s centrepiece is the brightly lit black-marble coffee counter, topped with a sizeable espresso machine, pastry display and filter station. The rest of the interior boasts a product shelf loaded with takeaway beans, a low-set tiled bench and tiered bleachers-style seating for those keen to socialise while sipping.

Dae and Eddie treat their coffee with the same reverence a sommelier might give to a wine list. Like sharp-sensed oenophiles, the two have taken into account everything from taste profiles and texture when putting together The Hideout’s debut coffee selection, which is a multi-roast affair. The Hideout currently features a three-roaster offering, including the likes of Sensory Lab, Proud Mary and Five Senses. The Hideout’s house blend is Sensory Lab’s Steadfast espresso blend – which is the go-to for any milk-based brew – while the fruit-forward Tightrope blend by Five Senses is The Hideout’s current choice for black coffee. If you’re a of fan filter coffee (pour over, batch brew or cold brew), The Hideout has sourced a natural single origin that is markedly different from common washed coffee. Dae and Eddie are keen to showcase other top-notch roasters on a rotating basis. The rest of the drinks selection includes specialty tea from Larsen and Thompson, hot chocolate, chai lattes, HRVST ST. juices and bottled kombucha. Although The Hideout isn’t equipped with a full kitchen, the nook is stocked with fresh pastries, muesli pots from BRKFST, smashed avocado on toast, breakfast toasties and croque monsieurs, as well as a lunchtime offering of The Whole Box salads and Reuben sandwiches.
