Coastal vibes and all-day breakfast at Hendra’s new hang The Hamptons

Sure, the leafy surrounds of Hendra might be a far cry from Long Island’s famed playground for the rich and famous The Hamptons, but that doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy a slice of Hampton here in Brisbane. The team behind popular Paddington cafe Chapter IV and Brisbane City’s Phat Elephant has taken over a charming corner Queenslander, turning it into a bright and inviting venue with plenty of beach-side charm and a menu of inventive fare.

The deal
Over the past few years, Alyssa Phadungkiat has amassed a great portfolio of well-received eateries, and her latest venture proves that she’s certainly got the touch when it comes to concept execution. The Hamptons on Gerler Road is a cafe that takes a bit of local history and makes it modern, fusing various influences to create something timeless. This cafe sits within a historic Queenslander that was at one stage of its life a popular corner store before turning into local eatery The Tuckshop. Alyssa and her team purchased the space and The Tuckshop name and wasted no time transforming the interior into a chic space that uses neutral tones and timbers to evoke the sophisticated elegance of The Hamptons aesthetic. The building came pre-equipped with a sizeable outdoor area for dining and a coffee window for express service, but it’s Alyssa’s approach to the fare that is the true talking point of The Hamptons.

The food and drink
The Hamptons already seduced us with three simple words – all-day breakfast – but the menu packs a genuinely alluring array of breakfast bites, lunch items and share plates with a vibrant Asian twist. If we were to single out a few dishes, we’d draw attention to the likes of the impressive-sounding Breakfast in Bread, which boasts lamb and rosemary sausages, maple-cured bacon, spinach, mozzarella and tomatoes in a Japanese milk bun, laid on top of house-made bourbon baked beans. Jaws regularly hit the floor when the fluffy matcha pancakes (with candied ginger ice-cream and red velvet crumble) arrive at the table, while the panko and hazelnut crusted field mushroom with pandan hollandaise and parmesan wafers is another hit. At lunch the goodness continues, with the green curry spaghetti paired with mussels and tiger prawns, sugar snap and green peppercorns worth ordering. Pair that with Campos coffee, Origin tea, milkshakes, freshly squeezed juices and fresh coconut water (served in a husk) and Alyssa and her team have covered all bases.

The extras
The coming months will see The Hamptons team introduce a dinner service with a modern Australian-meets-Asian spin, paired with a liquor license. Expect Sunday sessions in the outdoor area complete with live music performances. Alyssa and her team will also revive The Tuckshop name with a new location on Nudgee Road, offering takeaway bites such as rolls, sandwiches and chips.
