The Grocer: Goji Berries
Often sold in its dried form of red wrinkled husks, the goji berry is becoming a mainstay in the health food aisle of many supermarkets. In its original form, you’ll find the crimson fruit swarming tall bushes of honeysuckle in Chinese plantations, where they are revered for medicinal purposes.
The purported miracle health benefits of the fruit seem to be endless, earning it the title of the new ‘superfood’ for the West. Some of these benefits include glucose reduction, antioxidant properties, immune boosting, neuroprotection and anti-inflammatory properties, as well as helping in the treatment of high blood pressure, diabetes and fever.
Goji berries can be eaten raw or cooked and thrown into teas, juices and wine. The dried form of the berry is perhaps the most common – soft and chewy like a sultana, dried goji berries taste slightly more sour than the popular afternoon snack. They can also be eaten strewn over porridge, throughout muesli and in your morning smoothie for a health kick.
