The Grocer: Cornichons

Settled comfortably between the gruyere and fromager d’affinois of the modern cheeseboard is often a small pile of cornichons. The petite pickles are small enough to enjoy without awkwardness and a great way to add a tart bite to an array of cheese treats.

Cornichons are small pickled cucumbers (or gherkins), about five centimetres in length. Thanks to the size, they are much easier to serve in public than a traditional pickle and luckily require no chopping or preparation. The finger food can be served at a cocktail event, portioned up with slabs of ham and buttery bread for a picnic or used to garnish a simple sandwich.

Cornichons are also incredibly popular served in the French creation Cornichons and Goujons – essentially small pieces of white fish and a tartare sauce created from the pickle.

The treat is easily bought by the jar (containing a deliciously briney liquid) at delis and supermarkets.
