The Grocer: Choko
This peculiar looking vegetable is incredibly versatile and easy to grow, meaning it is a great ingredient to incorporate into your home cooking.
The choko, otherwise known as chayote, is a green pear shaped vegetable that is rich in vitamin C and beneficial amino acids. The vegetable is originally native to South America, but became incredibly popular in Australia during the Depression era thanks to its abundant yield and tendency to absorb the flavour of other ingredients. The fruit is easy to grow at home and is suited to warmer climates and can be mashed, boiled, pickled, bakes, fried and sautéed.
If you fancy yourself a green thumb, try your hand at growing your own little crop of chokos and begin using them in the kitchen. If you have a few on hand or come across some at your local farmers market, have a go at using them in your next stir-fry dish, or bake it with some bacon and cheese. Chokos can also be incorporated into curries, enchiladas and spicy Caribbean recipes.
