The Grocer: Cane Berries

The Grocer: Cane Berries

You may have heard the term cane berries thrown around in recipes, but don’t be alarmed – it’s not a new species of berry you’ve never heard of, but rather a classification.

Cane berries are descendants of blackberries, raspberries and dewberries, and can also include youngberries, loganberries, boysenberries and bramble berries. Generally, berries are any fruit that does not grow on a vine or tree, and can be broken up into two main groups – bush or cane berries. Cane berries are your pick-and-eat varieties, and are generally more expensive that their bush friends, including blueberries, cranberries and currants.

Queensland’s warm summer weather is the perfect season for cane berries. After picking up your haul from the weekend markets (and eating your share straight from the punnet), you can add your cane berries to a number of different recipes. We’re dying to make these blackberry tartlets with lemon cream, or sink our teeth into these lavender blackberry scones. Summer mornings will be starting off well with these raspberry breakfast bars, or made ever so indulgent with these chevre and blackberry raised doughnuts. For later in the day, cool off with homemade blackberry ice-cream. If you’re eager to experiment with some of the lesser-known varieties of cane berries, try your hand at this baked loganberry and white chocolate cheesecake, or this elderflower and bramble berry pavlova.
