When Kiri Waiata-Green took over the reigns of the space that once housed York’s Hollow, it was with the aim of transforming it into a receptacle for what she called, ‘all of her crazy ideas’. As a musician herself, Kiri had long wanted a venue to transform into a community space that could showcase and nourish local talent, while also being a warm and welcoming haunt for those seeking a caffeinated respite. The location on Brookes Street couldn’t have been any more perfect, offering a venue space upstairs and room for coffee and bar service on the street front. After gutting the space, soundproofing the walls and floors and revamping the bar, The Green Owl recently unveiled its band room, filled with recycled and vintage furniture and a stage for musicians to perform.

When it comes to the food and drink, Kiri has chosen to keep things simple and approachable. The Green Owl’s baristas are adept at whipping up cups of excellent Di Bella coffee, while those feeling peckish can snack on fresh sandwiches sourced from Gerbinos. As the morning drifts into the afternoon, the bar starts serving craft beer from local brewers, locally sourced organic wine and Australian-made spirits as well as antipasto plates to nibble on. While The Green Owl is already hosting live music several nights a week, the near future will see special events take place including a coffee shop choir, open mic nights, and meet the maker sessions with local artisans and craftspeople, whose wares will also be stocked on The Green Owl’s upcycled shelves.
