Seeking greener pastures (or perhaps the better analogy is more bountiful seas) East Brisbane’s iconic fish and chippery has packed up the deep fryer and moved locations. The Fishmonger’s Wife is now trading from its swish new home in Hawthorne, where the calamari is cooked to perfection, the chips are crispy and the fish is so fresh you’d think you’d just caught it yourself.

When it comes to Brisbane’s best fish and chips, the name on the tip of most people’s tongues is The Fishmonger’s Wife. For the past 15 years the eatery has been dishing out some of the finest finned cuisine from its long-standing Lytton Road location, but the times they are a changin’ and owners Sue and Steve Meadowcroft decided that a shake up was long overdue. After polling the suburbs of their regular patrons, the duo realised a majority of their business was local, cementing the need to remain on Brisbane’s east side. After a short search the couple discovered their dream site – a 100-year old heritage home – under development in Hawthorne. Sue and Steve jumped at the chance to put their mark on the space, which has resulted in a modern and warm fit-out that sees the dine-in and takeaway portions of the venue separated for easy ordering. The furniture has been constructed by Steve, with wooden booth seating giving patrons plenty of cosy nooks to nestle into inside.

One of the major factors contributing to The Fishmonger’s Wife’s popularity was its range of reasonably priced seafood. Well, good news folks because the menu has been carried across to Hawthorne in its entirety. The Fishmonger’s Wife’s crack team of chefs and staff has also followed the business across, ensuring the high standard of service continues. For those of you who haven’t had the chance to experience the fare here, you are in for a treat. The menu boasts the likes of salt, pepper and garlic calamari, fresh barramundi served in either Moroccan, Mediterranean herb or pesto style, freshly grilled and dukkah-crusted Atlantic salmon, spicy Thai octopus, rib fillet burgers and much more. The Fishmonger’s Wife is licensed – we suggest pairing your meal with a white wine, beer or cider.

The Fishmonger’s Wife is now trading seven days a week for takeaway and dining in. Check out the Stumble Guide for contact details.
