Recreate all of your childhood favourites with The AWW 40th anniversary edition Children's Birthday Cake Book

Recreate all of your childhood favourites with The AWW 40th anniversary edition Children’s Birthday Cake Book

If you grew up in the 80s and 90s, it’s pretty likely that for at least one birthday, you were the proud-as-punch recipient of that now-iconic swimming pool cake – you know the one with the jelly in the middle and the chocolate finger biscuits around the sides? Or perhaps you were that kid who was lucky enough to get the jealousy-inducing train with multiple carriages or the duck with popcorn for hair and potato chips for a beak. Released in 1980, The Women’s Weekly Children’s Birthday Cake Book is firmly etched in childhood memories and now, cake-loving grown-ups, there’s a 40th anniversary edition to bring back all of the nostalgia.

It reads like a photo album to your favourite childhood memories and to celebrate its 40th birthday, the iconic The Women’s Weekly Children’s Birthday Cake Book has been re-released so you can treat (torture) your offspring to the very same birthday cakes you remember. The limited-edition hard-cover version contains a collection of 50 must-try recipes including some much-loved classics (looking at you, Humpty Dumpty and Candy Castle) alongside some sensational new creations to whip up next time inspiration strikes.

The anniversary edition is divided into five themed sections including animals and creatures, playtime, numbers, for everyone and fantasy, and it will offer some helpful decorating tips, icings and frostings to ensure your kid’s creation doesn’t deserve a place on the next season of Nailed It!. The 40th-anniversary The Women’s Weekly Children’s Birthday Cake Cook Book is available to purchase from newsagents and supermarkets from Monday August 17 and bookstores from Tuesday August 18 or if you’re a sucker for vintage, you can pick up a reprint of the original book here. If you’re on the hunt for a little extra inspo (that you definitely won’t find in the pages of this book), legendary comedian Hamish Blake has made it his mission to create edible masterpieces every year for his kids birthdays – so far we’ve witnessed a truck with edible hinge, a six-layer ‘Slimer’ cake that spewed green icing, a velociraptor complete with thrashing tail, the Cave of Wonders from Aladdin and his most recent marvel, Sheepy for his adorable daughter.
