The American food craze grows in Brisbane
Here we were thinking that Mexican was still the latest exotic flavour tickling tastebuds across Brisbanetown, when its northern brother began to rear its Americana head for a turn in the limelight.
It all started with a lunch at Flamingo Cafe, where the round-bun sandwiches were toothpick-topped with a pitted olive.
Super Whatnot opened its speakeasy-esque doors serving up light fare that takes inspiration from The Americas, including a Po’Boy Sandwich with origins in Louisiana and the Fried Chicken served with spring onion crème fraiche a tad fancier than the bucket-based variety. Cabiria at The Barracks offers up a mean Reuben Sandwich of homemade corned beef, swiss cheese, cornichons and mustard on rye, as well as a ritzy Waldorf Salad, while Yard Bird Ale House goes greasy with Chilli Cheese Fries.
New York-traditional boiled-then-baked bagels can be picked up fresh each day from La Vosh Patisserie in Red Hill, or head to Lust for Life in Fortitude Valley for a plethora of tasty toppings from a simple schmear of cream cheese to a deluxe Brooklyn Bagel with added smoked salmon, red onion, dill and capers. American-food-crazed folk will also soon be able to pop next door after hours to The Manhattan Club for a spot of live jazz, while swaying with a fashionable Manhattan in hand.
