Taste opens up delightful new digs in Red Hill

If you were crestfallen to hear that Taste on James Street has closed, cry no more. The popular kitchenware and home wares retailer has pulled up stumps and moved to a new location on Windsor Road in Red Hill, stocked with the usual range of goods plus a few new surprises.

The space
You’ve got to hand it to Taste team – they’ve sure got an eye for location. Taste’s swanky new corner store is housed within an old grocer – a building that is 140 years old. Remnants of the building’s former life remain, including old hand-painted signage, an original fireplace and other rustic elements dotted around the space. Outside the front entrance sits ladders holding baskets of fresh produce, while inside the space is divided into a retail space, pantry and cafe with seating inside, out and downstairs. Want to see the space in greater detail? The food
If the name Taste didn’t clue you in, this place is all about food. Each portion of the space is dedicated to either food preparation or consumption, from the retail kitchenware to the pantry’s goods to the cafe fare. The cafe offers a neat selection of light meals such as Spanish sardines with ghost pickles, half bagels spread with homemade hummus, pies from Jocelyn’s Provisions, Crust & Co. pastries, a selection of salads and more. The general store portion stocks a range of dry goods, condiments, sauces, BNE Soda Co, Maleny dairies milk, cheese, meats, fruit and veg as well as fresh loaves from Danny’s Bread. Over beyond the retail counter is a curated selection of crockery, saucepans, cooking utensils and electrical goods, plus wooden boards, Andre Verdier and Opinel knives and body products from Smith & Co. A large portion of food served at Taste is made using ingredients available, and all dishes are served using kitchenware that can be purchased from the store.

The details
The soft opening for Taste’s Red Hill location was the Saturday July 16, and the space is now open seven days. The downstairs section will be used for masterclasses, book launches and other special events. In the coming months an old brick coach house at the rear of the venue will be converted into a charming Air BnB, complete with antique furniture to reflect the building’s history. The James Street Taste will be having a final garage sale to get rid of excess stock on Saturday July 30.
