In the mood for noods – Taro’s Ramen opens in South Brisbane

The name Taro Akimoto is almost already synonymous with Brisbane’s thriving ramen scene, but despite his success he’s never been one to rest on his laurels. South Brisbane is home to a fully-fledged ramen joint of its own now that Taro’s Ramen has opened its fourth location on Melbourne Street. The largest venue Taro’s Ramen has occupied to date, patrons are guaranteed to find Taro’s signature range of ramen as well as a range of mouth-watering sides, served in enough space to slurp safely.

You can never predict when opportunity will knock, but when it does it helps to be prepared to seize the opportunity. It was only a little bit over a year ago that Taro’s Ramen opened its bustling inner-city eatery inside 480 Queen Street. Despite a short turnaround between projects, Taro Akimoto jumped at an opportunity to build his empire up some more with a new location in South Brisbane. Formerly home to Soccarat Paella Bar, the space presented to Taro was a no-brainer – a furnished space, a fully operational kitchen and an unbeatable location that was ready to inhabit immediately. Before long Taro had the venue up and running, adding in some new booth seating complete with an iPad ordering system on each table that will be familiar to frequent visitors of Taro’s Ascot location.

A quick flick through the iPad menus will reveal a huge range of piping hot bowls of ramen and a range of snack-worthy sides. In addition to the ever-popular tonkotsu ramen, patrons can slurp up serves of tsukemen, shio, shoyu and miso ramen, as well as vegetarian dry noodles, fire tonkotsu varieties and monthly ramen specials. Non-ramen dishes extend to chicken karaage curries, potato croquettes, gyoza, pork kimchi rice and more. The coming weeks will see three beer taps installed, which will pour Suntory Premium Malt, Orion and Asahi Black, which complements the range of bottled varieties, plum wines, shochu and sake. In the new year, patrons will also be able to experience a bit of kitchen theatre when a gyoza wrapping machine is installed behind the bar, giving a glimpse of how the scrumptious parcels are made.
