Bite into a crunchy apple from Stanthorpe Fruit Company

Biting into a crunchy apple is one of life’s sweet pleasures, but did you know that an actual fresh apple is seasonal? All apples around the country are picked between the months of January and July and each variety is only picked for about four weeks within those months. So outside of the picking season, all apples have some form of treatment to keep them perfectly ripe and ready to eat.

There are a number of ways to keep an apple fresh and crunchy, but Lindsay Spencer from Stanthorpe Fruit Company thinks his method, using a natural product to mimic nature in cool rooms not freezers, produces the best tasting fruit.

Inspired by his father who worked on apple farms and with a background in supermarket produce, Lindsay set off to study Agribusiness at The University of Queensland. With his degree in hand, he decided to test his skills than Stanthorpe, starting to work on apple farms. A healthy passion for fruit (in particular the red apple) lead to Lindsay’s desire to share Stanthorpe’s bounty with his old stomping ground, Brisbane, so he set up a market stall under the name Stanthorpe Fruit Company. Sourcing apples directly from two of farms he worked on, Lindsay now supplies a full range of apples and pears to the Red Hill Farmers Markets, Carseldine Farmers and Artisan Markets, Nundah Farmers Market and Kuraby Farmers Markets.

Royal Gala, Granny Smith, Sundowners, Fuji, Pink Lady, Jonathan and Golden Delicious apples are piled high on these market tables weekly and Lindsay’s secret comes back to his supermarket experience, seeing how much supermarkets and wholesalers reject and how much goes to waste. Believing passionately in the phrase ‘why would you wax when you know the truth’, Lindsay knew that passionate foodies can bite into an unglossed and not necessarily perfectly-shaped apple and know that it tastes good and is better for you.
