Southside Tea Room opens for an evening tipple

The quirky and comforting coffee nook that is The Grates’ Southside Tea Room at Morningside is now a happy recipient of a liquor licence and will officially draw back the yellow curtain for an evening trade from this Friday.

In light of the new tipple times, the Southside Tea Room fridge has been kitted out with a selection of Mac’s beers and Monteith’s cider from New Zealand as well as American Sierra Nevada and Bear Republic’s Racer 5 India Pale Ale. The rotating tap beer is currently home to Stone & Wood Pacific Ale – which is served to you New York style in jars – and there’s a selection of red and white wines.

Usual players of the spirits game will enjoy offerings of gin, rum and vodka, as well as Captain Morgan Original Spiced Gold and Espolon tequila. The sole cocktail, appropriately dubbed ‘Southside’, is a concoction of lime, mint, soda, gin and simple syrup for those who like a slightly fanciful swill. Pretzels are on hand to wash it all down, along with two subs – the Hungry Hippie and Italian Hero.

Decked out with macrame pot holders, faux flower garlands and vintage lounges, the new back drinking den is spacious and relaxed, with a hint of boyish excitement coming from the (free) pinball machine. The bar is open from 5:00 pm on Friday and 2:00 pm on Saturday and Sunday, with hopes to expand to Thursdays to once the team gets the routine rolling.

On the cafe side of things, new menu additions include sugar-free, gluten-free and vegan whoopee pies, bootleg iced vovos and chocolate-coated pretzels. Southside’s baker is also having a riot of a time cramming potato chips and other non-traditional oddities into cookie batter, so make sure to check out the selection when you next duck in for a daylight pit stop too.
