South Side Diner opens at South Bank
A slice of pastel-hued retro heaven has opened on Grey Street, bringing classic American nosh and spiked shakes to South Bank.
A hit of 1950s Americana has struck the south side. Think pulled pork sliders, beer-battered onion rings and salted caramel shakes. Harun Gencerler – the man behind Next Door Kitchen & Bar and Ahmet’s Turkish Restaurant – has now dreamt up South Side Diner, a quirky American eatery where you could imagine The T-Birds and The Pink Ladies firing verbal missiles between the booths. Pull up a chrome stool at the bar, pop a dollar in the jukebox when it lands, and settle in for a nostalgic feast.
Head chef Dean Brewer has made a lindy hop from Next Door to South Side, dishing up an extensive menu packed with American classics. Start the day with a sumptuous stack of pancakes teamed with streaky bacon and Canadian maple syrup, or a crispy fried ham hock smash complete with fried egg and truffle salt. Lunch and dinner will require a set of stretchy pants, with hearty dishes like the foot-long smoked bourbon hot dog, sticky barbecue beef ribs and buffalo wings. Good old mac ‘n’ cheese also gets dressed up, boasting gourmet additions like goats cheese, spring pea and spinach, and caramelised onion with double-smoked spec. If your elastic waistband still has room to move, there’s no going past a slice of pumpkin, cherry or apple pie, topped off with an alcoholic Tootsie Roll or Reese’s Peanut Nutter Shake.
