In news that will come as a blow to lovers of cabbage pancakes, acclaimed cafe Sourced has announced its forthcoming closure. In a statement posted to the cafe’s Instagram and Facebook page, owner Jerome Batten shared that the popular eatery would cease trading once the business’s lease ended on Monday February 10. The restaurateur reflected on Sourced’s nine-year tenure, offering thanks to customers, producers, growers and makers that had supported the cafe since it opened in the former nondescript warehouse space in June 2011.

Originally opening as Sourced Grocer, the operation quickly won a loyal fanbase thanks to its philosophy of supporting local, sustainable and organic produce wherever possible. The year it opened, Sourced won Best Corner Store and nabbed runner-up for Best New Cafe in the 2011/12 EAT/drink Awards, going on to reign as Best Providore in 2012 and 2013. In 2014, Sourced Grocer was awarded World’s Best Neighbourhood Shop in Monocle Magazine’s Global Retail Awards. Last year the venue underwent a conceptual shake-up, moving away from its grocer component in favour of a greater emphasis on food and drink. Rebranded as Sourced, the cafe pivoted towards a relaxed cafe setting with a larger kitchen and coffee bar installed.

It’s not all sad news though – you can still visit Sourced’s award-winning sister venues Gauge and Maker in South Brisbane for Jerome and team’s signature brand of considered hospitality. Sourced’s last day of trade is Sunday February 9 – be sure to pop in for one last crumpet.
