Just when you thought Brisbane’s buzzing foodie nexus Newstead was completely chock-a-block with top-notch eats, the suburb surprises us with more. New-age Thai eatery and cocktail spot Som Saa officially opened at the base of the Energex head office building on Reddacliff Street earlier this week on Tuesday June 1, enticing the local lunch crowd with a host of playful takes on Thai-inspired wok and grill-based dishes.

If you love pad Thai, panang curry and puns, then Newstead newcomer Som Saa is likely going to align very nicely with your tastes. The latest concept conceived and executed by the team at Icatha Hospitality Solutions is bringing a bit of tongue-in-cheek attitude to Reddacliff Street, the oft-overlooked strip situated near the Gasworks and Haven foodie precincts. At its core, Som Saa is an energetic, accessible and casual grub spot specialising in Thai-style wok and grilled dishes – think family recipes given a new-age twist by an expert team of Thai chefs. The 80-seater space boasts a mix of interior and outdoor seating, with an aesthetic reminiscent of Koh Samui’s lavish resorts (coupled with some punny neon signs) offering a breezy and carefree oasis from Newstead’s bustling atmosphere.

Som Saa’s menu is easy to navigate, with a punchy selection of familiar dishes rendering lunchtime decision making easy. Those in need of a morning stomach liner can swing through for a brekkie roll, bacon-and-egg SomBun or satay-chicken SomBun – with a coffee, coconut water or juice to go if desired. Som Saa’s lunch menu boasts protein or vegetable-loaded pad Thai, green, red, yellow and panang curries, noodle- and rice-based wok stir-fries, steaming piles of fried rice, a rotating selection of wraps and salads, plus sides like pork buns and dim sums. Soon the eatery will add a night menu to its offering, featuring a mix of crowd pleasers and offbeat takes on traditional Thai dishes. The drinks selection will be expanded, too – expect a small clutch of cocktails, beers and a concise wine list to enjoy alongside Som Saa’s fare.

Som Saa is now open to the public – head to the Stumble Guide for operating hours and menu details.
