Sip and snack on the finer things at Portside’s Sense of Taste
We’re calling it – the age of the humble local bottle shop is over. Well, not over completely – there will always be a place for a quick pre-game pit-stop. But after seeing what is on offer at Portside’s newest food and drink emporium Sense of Taste, it’s going to be hard to settle for anything else. Sense of Taste is a home for experiences, not only material goods – where customers get sample some premium tastes in addition to stocking up on cheese, smallgoods, craft beer, fine wine and top-shelf spirits
Not long ago Sense of Taste quietly opened in the heart of Hamilton’s Portside precinct, which means at this stage not many people have cottoned on to the veritable treasure trove of delights within. Sense of Taste is not just a bottle shop – it’s an outlet that seeks to offer something for everyone, whether they are simply time poor, eager to try new things or are already used to the finer things in life. Pairing quality alcohol with a boutique cheese and smallgoods offering, Sense of Taste is the perfect spot for those wanting to improve their nights at home entertaining or simply enjoying a quiet sip and a snack.
The shelves at Sense of Taste are stocked to capacity with a stellar range of wines, craft beers and spirits, but the browsing experience is something like you’ve never experienced. The front of the store stocks a range of smallgoods, including Spanish quinces and French cheeses sourced through Le Fromage Yard. You’ll need to pair your choice of supplies with something to drink. Knowledgeable staff are on hand to help guide your journey of discovery, with boutique wines, beers and spirits available to sample as you peruse the shelves of rare and exclusive varieties. At the rear of the store is a fully equipped brewing station, where local brewers will hold masterclasses and demonstrations, filling kegs on site that will be available to drink from Sense of Taste’s own beer taps. The taps will also feature seasonal and limited edition drops, which can be taken home in a squealer or growler filled then and there. Sense of Taste is more wonderland than humble bottle-o – patrons are encouraged to let their hair down and linger, because when it comes to quality you can’t rush your choice.
