New cafe Scout opens on Petrie Terrace

New cafe Scout has taken up residence in one of the empty shells that line Petrie Terrace, bringing a friendly atmosphere and much-needed breakfast and lunch locale to the area. Owners Suse Whitehouse and Candy Smith have dreamt of opening Scout for a few years now, so when the space arose, they jumped at the opportunity to turn their dream into a reality.

New Zealand coffee roaster Coffee Supreme supplies the beans at Scout, with the coffee composed of the perfect espresso-to-milk ratio, resulting in a particularly silky and smooth drop. At breakfast, the Welsh Rarebit (aka fancy cheese toast) comes served with mushrooms, fresh rocket and red onion, while the Bircher Muesli with yoghurt, pear and chai honey will satisfy any sweet cravings. There’s gluten-free bread on offer and usually some kind of baked goods gracing the counter. We hear the lightly toasted bagels are perfection, topped with the likes of smoked salmon, pickled red onion, quark and lettuce or ham, calabrese, brie, tomato, pickled cucumber and rocket at lunchtime.

All the woodwork at Scout has been handcrafted by local artisan James Talty, who runs a furniture studio on Musgrave Road in Red Hill. Using salvaged and recycled materials, James fashioned the counter front, stools and benches for the cafe. Exposed brick lines one wall of Scout, with an assortment of greenery brightening the space. Seating comes in the form of individual small tables, a large communal table in the second room, or pull up a spot by the wide front windows to soak up blissful some Petrie Terrace morning sun.
