Porcelain plates to supermarket aisles – sashimi-grade tuna to soon be sold at your local Coles
With many of the nation’s top restaurants adapting to the times with scaled-back operations or making the call to close down entirely, the premium-grade seafood that would normally be allocated to top chefs and kitchens is set to find its way to local supermarkets shelves at a fraction of the price.
According to ABC News, a number of Australian seafood exporters are now being forced to push high-end produce towards the domestic market at cut-rate prices. The report reveals that Queensland’s Walker Seafoods, which supplies high-end Australian restaurants along with Japan and the United States, has struck a deal with Coles supermarkets across Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria.
For the first time ever, the exporter’s sashimi-grade tuna will soon hit the shelves at various locations across the three East Coast states, allowing the company to stay afloat and retain staff during the COVID-19 downturn. It’s set to be sold at a rock-bottom price of just $35 per kilo – sharpen those knives, sashimi lovers!
