Cruise in for Californian eats at Santa Monica

The sun is warming your face, there’s an ice-cold beer (or perhaps cocktail) in your hand. You’re surrounded by your greatest pals and listening to some killer beats. Before you sits a lemon-pepper fried-shrimp baguette, topped with remoulade sauce, oak lettuce, tomato and pickled red onions, beckoning you to take a bite. Need to make this hypothetical scenario a reality? Then you best head to Santa Monica, Brisbane City’s newest bar and eatery.

Santa Monica opened its doors bright and early this morning, Wednesday August 17, and is the newest project from Bellezza Group – which you know from Bar Pacino, Chocolate Soldier, Espresso Veloce and Metropole Bar Eatery. The venue sits on the corner of Edward and Ann Streets and makes the most of its semi-open-air space, embracing a relaxed Californian vibe all year round. Think roofless hut-style booths, banana-leaf wallpaper and a rad-ass cruiser bike that screams Santa Monica Pier. On the street you’ll find Santa Monica Express, where you can grab coffee, sandwiches, burgers, hot dogs and more to takeaway. The kiosk doubles as a beer window, where those dining in can grab a quick cold one to wash down their feast.

Speaking of feasts – you’re in for a serious one at Santa Monica. Much like the fit-out, the menu takes its inspiration from sunny California, serving up American-style fare with an Italian twist. Your cravings are covered from early morning to night-time eats, with the kitchen open right through the day until late. On the breakfast menu you’ll find the likes of smashed avocado on toast, Italian baked eggs and bruschetta with grilled haloumi, which you can pair with a cheeky espresso martini from 10:00 am. For lunch and dinner you’ll find salads, pizza, pasta, burgers and more – and by more we mean hellooo cheese and bacon fries. Let your mouth water over the idea of five-spice crispy pork belly, house-made slow-cooked beef-cheek pappardelle, or the Santa Monica Burger topped with two grilled Angus patties, American cheddar, special sauce, dill pickles, salad and smoky barbecue sauce. If you can’t possibly make a decision, grab a bunch of mates and share in the gargantuan three-storey share tower, overflowing with all the best bits from the menu.
