Ruby in Paddington draws hearty brunch crowd

Opening a cafe opposite Paddington brunch fav Anouk seems like a fairly bold move. But with foodstuffs like roasted kipfler potatoes with lavender salt and fried brioche with smoked trout, goats cherve, poached eggs, asparagus, watercress and lime on the menu, Ruby is proving a popular spot.

Since opening in November, Ruby quietly slinked on to the brunch agenda of Paddington’s passersby, with whispers of the cafe’s delectable dishes now tickling outer suburbs’ ears.

Experimental (but not scary), the flavour fusions across food and drinks intrigue – the pineapple crush juice is made smooth and exotic with added lavender, and the house coffee of espresso with a dollop of sweetened condensed milk flew passed to many a table.

Ladies of leisure bring bottles of wine for their regular long lunch catch-ups, while young families park the pram under the candy-striped shade, taking their meals outdoors.

Try the huevos rancheros, spicy Mexican beans, baked eggs, chorizo, manchego and crusty ciabatta for something a little different, or the ever-popular bubble & squeak hash cakes with poached eggs, wilted spinach and beetroot leaves, basil hollandaise (both $16).

You may have to wait in line for a table on a Saturday morning, but the tastebud sensation Ruby delivers is a worthy reward.
