A popular spot for delicious South East Asian street food has upped the ante, opening a new dine-in spot in a prime location on Brunswick Street.

Shannon Oey and Chelsea Vanderspek’s Rogue Spice Canteen has earned a serious following thanks to its aromatic and flavoursome menu of Asian bites. Succulent ribs, mouth-watering curries and finger-licking wings are just a portion of what has been on offer at the hole-in-the-wall spot tucked away near the Brunswick Central Apartments. Last year Shannon and Chelsea offered their dishes at the Night Noodle Markets to rapturous enthusiasm and noticed an increasing demand for their brand of cuisine. Fast forward to 2016 and Rogue Spice Canteen has expanded – taking over a prime corner location in the Judith Wright Centre formerly occupied by Glass Bar. The space has been overhauled to unveil some of the natural elements of the space while maintaining a clean and comfortable aesthetic. Tables have been set up to cater for group dining – which could not be easily accommodated at the first location – while bench seating provides a great opportunity for people watching.

Following the mantra ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’, Shannon and Chelsea have kept the concise menu that has continuously grown in popularity. Rogue Spice Canteen offers eight dishes for lunch and dinner, with dinner seeing portion sizes increases to cater for shared dining (or extra hungry patrons). Dishes such as 12-hour pork belly Penang curry, char-grilled coconut beef ribs and twice cooked red duck curry will have you salivating as soon as the aromas hit your nostrils, with eye-catching plating increasing the sensory feast. All dishes are gluten and dairy-free except for the roti. Rogue Spice Canteen will soon be serving a range of South East Asian-inspired cocktails using similar ingredients to those used in the food as well as a selection of Asian beers and some Australian favourites. For those curious about what will become of the first location, fear not – the original Rogue Spice Canteen will continue operating as a takeaway and delivery location.
