On Tuesday April 27 2004, at The Commercial Club Hotel in Fitzroy North, the first-ever QuizMeisters show was held. Fast forward 20 years and Quiz Meisters is now one of Australia’s leading trivia companies performing weekly wacky shows in pubs, breweries, bars and hotels across the country.

From early on, Quiz Meisters fostered a close relationship with the craft-beer scene, noticing the crossover in audience appeal between quiz fans and craft-beer stans. From partnering with breweries for its Beer of the Month newsletters to taking its trivia to taprooms, it positioned itself as the craft beer of trivia choices, even at times touting the tagline “the world’s best tasting pub trivia”.

So when it came time to celebrate this emerald anniversary it was a no-brainer to bask in the glow of contentment with a commemorative brewski. The only problem was that there were too many breweries interested in taking a punt! So a challenge was set to all interested parties to craft a brew that could capture the spirit of Quiz Meisters – twisted takes on tradition that prioritise curiosity, innovation and fun.

The results scored top points across the board – an elective collection of unique beers featuring some left-of-centre ingredient pairings and puntastic names that would be at home at the head of any trivia team. 

From Tallboy & Moose in Victoria there is Deep Steep, an American amber with chamomile. South Australia’s Brightstar Brewing presents Quiz Zing, a beetroot and ginger Berliner Weisse. Mastermind, from Victorian Cavalier Brewing is a Mango XPA dedicated to all of the terrific trivia hosts, while Nut it Out is a walnut, coffee and ginseng pastry stout by Rocks Brewing Co in New South Wales. Brisbane’s own Happy Valley Brewing Co brings forth Bonus Point, a blueberry, chocolate and marshmallow stout. Crafty Robot from South Australia presents Smarty Pints, a ginger, mandarin and chocolate stout. Moch It In is an iced mocha latte ale by Akasha Brewing Company in New South Wales, Rizzle Quizzle, a pineapple and raspberry sour by Western Australia’s Nowhereman Brewery, and Head Scratcher is a citrus West Coast IPA by Woolstore Brewery, South Australia.

All beers will be available in May at their respective taprooms and participating Quiz Meisters venues, remaining on tap until the kegs run dry. In Queensland participating venues include Happy Valley Brewing Co. and Brewski. To learn more, you can check out the Quiz Meister’s website.
