Beer and pickles a specialty at Alderley’s Ploughman

Situated on the corner of Samford and South Pine Road, Ploughman is a new suburban bar that brings together the local community with beer, meat, cheese and pickled nibbles.

Larraine Henning and Leigh Graham conceived the idea of a bar combining craft beer, charcuterie and fermented foods more than 18 months ago after an intimate get together with friends over cheese and meat platters. After casting a curious eye around Alderley, the couple hit the jackpot with a brilliant corner location that was originally Raymont’s Store – one of the first commercial buildings in Alderley, built in 1882. Drawing upon their respective skills as an architect and an electrician, Larraine and Leigh set about converting the empty space into a chic and modern bar, with utilitarian materials such as peg board, plywood, steel and concrete forming the palette with which they adorned their dream space. The end result is Ploughman – a cosy spot that incorporates plenty of natural light, comfortable group seating and space for potted greenery.

Ploughman’s food and drink offering is concise yet unique. The menu boasts two sizes of the Ploughman’s board, piled with meat, cheese, house made pickles and fig paste (the larger size board features more variants). Also on the menu are three sandwiches including a grilled cheese with rich Gruyere and house made sauerkraut, pastrami on rye with horseradish mayo and pickles on the side and the Ploughman sandwich. Rounding out the menu is the Pickle Party platter with a rotating selection of house made pickled vegetables. Larraine and Leigh will mix up the locally sourced meat and cheese offering regularly, with choice morsels sourced from Meat at Billy’s and bread from Crust & Co. The bar is fitted with four taps, pouring a combination of Brisbane brews and an ever-changing selection of predominantly Australian beer. The bar fridges are also stocked with bottled and canned beers. The wine offering is divided into light, medium and full bodied types, with three whites, three reds and one sparkling on hand. The back bar boasts a range of small batch spirits from across Australia, with nips available with mixers such as HRVST St juices and Karma Cola soft drinks.
