Woolloongabba brunch spot Pawpaw teams up with Sprout Artisan Bakery and friends for a pop-up bakehouse

If anything is going to get us through self-isolation (without going completely crazy), it’s the sweet relief of baked goods. With eggs, flour and just about everything you need to bake at home now listed as a hot commodity due to growing demand, it looks like homemade banana bread may be off the quarantine menu. Luckily for us, Woolloongabba’s much-loved brunch locale Pawpaw has got our carb-loving backs. The crew at Pawpaw is teaming up with Sprout Artisan Bakery as well as a few other local heroes to launch a weekly pop-up bakery and market. The temporary bakehouse will be packed to the brim with treats such as flaky French-inspired pastries, piping-hot cinnamon doughnuts and sugary slices that’ll surely tide us over until grocery shelves get restocked and life returns to a (relatively) normal state.

If the familiar scent of freshly baked goods is leading you to the leaf-laden streets of Woolloongabba, then you’re heading in the right direction. Pawpaw and the fine folks from Sprout Artisan Bakery are teaming up for a pop-up bakery every Saturday and Sunday from 7:00 am to 1:00 pm inside the cafe at the corner of Stanley Street East and Potts Street. The pop-up, whilst still strictly enforcing social-distancing rules, will be serving up artisan goods like fresh jam and cream doughnuts, decadent chocolate almond croissants, apricot danishes, slabs of sweet-tooth satisfying cake, as well as gluten-free goodies and vegan treats made in-house. This weekend, Saturday April 24 to Sunday April 25, will also see Pawpaw team up with the talented foodies that make Pepeleonskitchen handmade gluten-free pastaWholly Crumpets and Only T ‘saniTEA DIY Pot making kits – everything you need to get through self iso. There will even be wreaths of cinnamon-filled, sugar-glazed Swedish coffee bread (also known as tea ring) to take home!

If that’s not enough, Pawpaw’s cafe is open for takeaway brews and brunchtime bites, slinging its beloved all-day menu. This means you can score yourself Pawpaw’s Signature Hash with potato hash cakes, poached eggs, turmeric hummus, smashed avocado, haloumi, beetroot relish and dukka to enjoy from the comfort – and safety – of your own home. With a mission to unite some of Brisbane’s best in baked goods during these uniquely uncertain times, the Pawpaw team is looking to work closely with other local businesses such as market holders and local makers to expand the pop-up bakery’s offerings. So count this as your invitation to stay tuned, as Pawpaw’s pop-up bakery’s permanent gang will likely soon be joined by some more local foodie legends.

Hang on, there’s more – if you want to burn off those extra calories from your well-deserved breadstuff pilgrimage, then get ready to strap on your dancing shoes as both Pawpaw’s Woolloongabba and Balmoral locations are holding weekly Saturday night discos for when you pick up your takeaway. The weekend dance sessions includes all the boogie-inducing bells and whistles – think 70s disco hits, disco lights and we hope, a shining disco ball to groove under. All from a respectable and safe distance, of course.
