Pavement Whispers: Vol 42 September 29

From whispers of new burger hangouts to food trucks, The Weekend Edition is always on the search for the latest news in Brisbane, dedicated to ensuring its readers are in the know. When we put our ears to the pavement this week, this is what we found out …

The Bleachers
Those burger-flippin’ geniuses at Ben’s Burgers have a new project underway, this time joining forces with talented chef Ben Devlin (Esquire, Beerkary Bakery and most recently Paper Daisy). Their new hang, The Bleachers, will sit on West End’s Boundary Street, and will table a considered seasonal menu alongside Ben’s much-loved burgers and a soft-serve machine. The Bleachers won’t have a set theme, but distinct influences will shine through in the space’s design and with each seasonal menu. Keep an eye on The Weekend Edition for more soon – The Bleachers is set to open in October and we’re excited to see what last year’s winner of the EAT/drink Awards’ Best Restaurant serves up next.

Carolina Kitchen food truck
If you’ve ever wrapped your mitts around a giant hoagie, licked your fingers post buffalo wings or dug into a moreish homemade pie at Carolina Kitchen, chances are you left pretty gosh-darn satisfied. Well have we got some good news for you! The American eatery will soon be hitting the road in the form of a new Carolina Kitchen food truck, promising to deliver the full American package at events and markets around town. The truck will specialise in the food that Carolina Kitchen does best, with a special focus on its wholesome American-style pies (think pumpkin, cherry, pecan and key lime), while pumping out Southern soul music to match its Southern soul food and attitude. It’s due to hit streets in mid-October, look out on The Weekend Edition for updates.

New Woolloongabba bar
Woolloongabba is set to gain a new watering hole early next year in its bustling Logan Road precinct – talented cocktail master and Cobbler co-owner Martin Lange is planning a yet-to-be-named cocktail bar across from 1889 Enoteca. It will have a similar feel to Cobbler – whisky will still be greatly showcased – but with more of a cocktail focus and simple bar food. The bar will be housed inside a new heritage-listed development at 11 Logan Road, and will occupy approximately 40 percent of the total space, with room for more food tenancies to come.

Australian Bar Awards winners
Brisbane is certainly holding its own in the Australian bar scene of late. After recently winning Gourmet Traveller’s Australian Bar of the Year title, The Gresham has gone ahead and snapped up the same title at last week’s Australian Bar Awards in Sydney. Also representing our fine city, Brooklyn Standard took out Best Live Music Bar, Coppa Spuntino was awarded Wine Bar of the Year, Fortitude Valley institution The Bowery won the state title for Cocktail Bar of the Year, and Petrie Terrace’s Statler & Waldorf was crowned Queensland Pub of the Year. Congratulations to all of the teams, we’ll see you for a celebratory drink soon!
