Pavement Whispers: Vol 38 September 1

From whispers of baked goods to food-truck events, The Weekend Edition is always on the search for the latest news in Brisbane, dedicated to ensuring its readers are in the know. When we put our ears to the pavement this week, this is what we found out …

Damian Griffiths’ South Bank Venue
Just one week after announcing the opening of Les Bubbles in Pavement Whispers, we have some more exciting news from Damian Griffiths, the man behind Alfred & Constance, Doughnut Time, Kwan Brothers and more. The restaurateur has secured a new venue on South Bank’s Grey Street, which will house a number of kiosk-style offerings in the same space. The details are still being finalised, but we should be able to expect a Doughnut Time, an ice-cream sandwich kiosk and a decadent milkshake kiosk, with the potential for a few more additions. The venue is set to open this spring – look out for more information on The Weekend Edition soon.

Cake & Bake
Jocelyn Hancock won over Brisbane stomachs long ago thanks to the fantastic range of treats baked at Jocelyn’s Provisions, and she looks to retain her title as queen of baked goods with her new outlet Cake & Bake. Located on Montague Road in South Brisbane, Cake & Bake will see Jocelyn return to her roots and offer take-home goods using produce sourced from Braeside, her childhood home. Cakes, slices and savoury items will be available as well as salads and natural preserves including three-fruit marmalade, lemon curd and honey sourced from hives in Killarney. Look for Cake & Bake to open in October.

Taro’s Ramen & Cafe
Frequently lauded as Brisbane’s best ramen spot, Taro’s Ramen & Cafe is undergoing some significant changes. The cafe has closed the doors of its 363 Adelaide Street location in anticipation of a move to the forthcoming 480 Queen Street development. Until it can move in to its new digs, Taro’s Ramen & Cafe is setting up shop in a interim location at 288 Edward Street with a limited menu. Due to space restrictions in the kitchen, the menu has been shortened to tonkotsu ramen only and will not be serving liquor. The pop-up shop will open on September 7 for lunch and dinner, but from 6:00 pm on Friday September 4 Taro’s Ramen & Cafe will partner with Strauss on Elizabeth Street for one night only to serve a special menu including coal-roasted oysters, pork jowls and pork baos.

Food Trucks of the World
A new fortnightly food-truck event is popping up in King George Square, with its second instalment rolling in today. Happening every second Tuesday, Food Trucks of the World will see an array of food trucks provide lunchtime eats between 11:00 am and 2:30 pm. The selection of trucks will change each week, but expect to find the likes of The Bun Mobile, That BBQ Joint, King of the Wings and The Bone Lorry amongst the group. For today, Tuesday September 1, only a couple of trucks will be popping up to make way for the free 1940s-themed 75 Years of Memorable Music concert, so you can enjoy your meal then head into Brisbane City Hall to get your swing dance on. A full suite of trucks will be back on September 15.
