Pavement Whispers: Volume 273 September 1

From news of a Sydney Rock Oyster delivery service to celebratory popsicles, The Weekend Edition is always on the search for the latest food news in Brisbane, dedicated to ensuring its readers are in the know (while also supporting our local hospitality industry). When we put our ears to the pavement this week, this is what we found out …

East 33
The weather is getting warmer – ooh, it’s perfect oyster weather! So it’s ideal timing for major Sydney Rock Oyster farmer collective, East 33, to announce it has expanded its home-delivery service to Brisbane. We’re talking some of Australia’s best (and only native) oysters from some of our most well-regarded oyster farmers – these fine specimens are usually reserved for the country’s finest restaurants and are now available fresh to your door. The collective’s 33 Delivery launched in Brisbane yesterday, Monday August 31, meaning we can now get high-quality Sydney Rock Oysters year-round in the comfort of our homes. Choose from the Immunity Booster pack with two dozen high-zinc oysters, or opt for the Tasting Kit – oysters take on properties and flavours as a result of their environment, so this kit features eight oysters from the northern, central and southern New South Wales coasts respectively for you to taste the difference. There are also seasonal collections to sample. Simply head online, select your package of choice and whether you want them shucked or unshucked, and you’ll receive them the next day – from ‘shellar door’ to your front door.

Happy Pops
While spring and summer are undoubtedly the perfect seasons for seafood feasts, we can’t forget about the other warm-weather indulgence – ice-cream! Nothing takes the edge off a scorcher like an icy treat, and Happy Pops’ range of hand-crafted gelato pops are certified heat busters. The Noosa-born concept made its way to South Bank’s Stanley Street Plaza last year, bringing its range of preservative-free goodies to town and quickly cementing itself as a dessert lover’s go-to destination. To celebrate the South Bank dispensary’s first birthday on Saturday September 12, Happy Pops will be handing out pops for a good cause between 4:00–6:00 pm – all you need to do is hand over a gold coin, which will be donated to the Queensland Children’s Hospital. As always, guests will be able to customise their pop with a selection of terrific toppings, drool-worthy dips and decadent drizzles. Happy Pops will also be giving away five $100 vouchers on the day – to be in the running, simply take a photo in front of the Happy Pops First Birthday wall and pop it on Instagram with the hashtag #happypopsbirthday. Simple! That’s not all – Happy Pops will be adding a new deluxe birthday pop to the menu for a limited time. This bad boy boasts a Callebaut gold chocolate gelato pop topped with caramel crunch, Murray River pink salt and gold leaf – available between September 7–20.

The Farm Byron Bay
Five years after opening, The Farm Byron Bay has been sold to new owners. Founders Tom and Emma Lane are moving on to their next chapter (including focusing on luxe property The Range), but have ensured that The Farm’s Grow, Feed, Educate and Give Back philosophy will not be lost in the sale – the property’s legacy will continue with new owners Fraser and Allyson Short. The Shorts and the Lanes have known each other for a number of years (Fraser owns hotels, restaurants and bars, including Balcony Bar & Oyster Co. in Byron), with the Short family determined to continue to grow and develop The Farm’s community. To ensure a seamless transition, Tom and Emma will be working alongside Fraser and Allyson to provide advice and education around The Farm’s programs and ethos.
