Pavement Whispers: Volume 196 October 30

From whispers of a bloody Mary bar to an exciting collaboration, The Weekend Edition is always on the search for the latest news in Brisbane, dedicated to ensuring its readers are in the know. When we put our ears to the pavement this week, this is what we found out …

Proud Mary
Big news for fans of riverside dining – Brisbane Powerhouse will welcome a brand-new bar and eatery on Friday November 2 when WATT Bar & Restaurant’s space transforms into Proud Mary. Inspired by the vibrant culinary scene of America’s south, Proud Mary will be dishing up an array of soul food and riffs on classic cocktails, overseen by a killer all-female team. Diners can expect the likes of griddled crab cakes, build-your-own beef-brisket tortillas, French-dip pork-belly sandwiches, poutine doused in cheese curds and gravy, and seductive beignets. That’s not all – if you love a spicy tomato-based cocktail to kickstart your day, you’re going to love Proud Mary’s selection of bloody Mary variants, which come in single serves or in jugs. Keep your eyes on The Weekend Edition for a closer look!

Apartment and Violent Green
The walls are coming down! Iconic Brisbane retailers (and pals) Apartment and Violent Green have been neighbours for half a decade, but as of this Friday November 2 they will be joining forces to create one united super shop. The boutiques are relocating to a new spacious level-one location in the heart of Queen Street Mall, which will allow for an expanded curation of sought-after labels. The new store will be home to the Carhartt WIP flagship store, as well as Violent Green and Apartment’s premium selection of Australian and offshore labels including Common Projects, Perks and Mini, A.P.C. and an exclusive Commes des Garçons PLAY section. With a new expanded space also comes exciting new cult labels, including Opening Ceremony, Baserange and collabs such as Raf Simons x Fred Perry. Both Violent Green and Apartment are holding huge stockroom sales today and tomorrow (Tuesday October 30 to Wednesday October 31) in Violent Green’s current Albert Street store, closing Thursday and reopening in the new space on Friday from 5:00 pm. We’ll have more details for you on Thursday!

The Terrace by e’cco
A few months removed from opening its sleek Newstead location on Skyring Terrace, the e’cco bistro team are keeping the momentum going with a new concept. Owners Philip Johnson and Mary Randles will soon be unveiling a new casual bar and eatery next to their acclaimed restaurant called The Terrace by e’cco. The 50-seat venue will boast a breezy alfresco area with long timber tables and will be serving Southeast Asian eats from the e’cco kitchen. The menu encompasses a list of four-bite delights such as chargrilled broccolini, milk buns with chicken karaage, steamed barbecue pork buns and san choy bau, as well as sharable large plates like massaman coconut beef curry, master stock pork ribs and crispy salmon salad. Over at the bar, expect cheeky cocktails as well as a solid list of beer, wine and spirits. The Terrace is looking to be open in time for Melbourne Cup, so expect a closer look on The Weekend Edition soon!

Method to the Madness
Kenmore locals are soon to welcome a charming new cafe, inspired by the creative mind of William Shakespeare. Method to the Madness – a nod to Shakespeare’s Hamlet – is set to open in late November on the corner of Marshall Lane and Moggill Road, and will pay homage to the great writer through a striking feature wall, a bookshelf brimming with Shakespeare’s works, and even dishes named after his plays. By day, Method to the Madness will serve hearty breakfast and lunch options with coffee, such as black-sesame pork benedict and banana leaf-baked catch of the day, and by night it will transform into a vibrant neighbourhood bar. The cafe’s modern Australian menu will focus on healthy and honest food, sourcing locally grown ingredients from Queensland farmers.

Maniax Axe Throwing
Ready to release a little of that end-of-year tension? Planning your office Christmas party? Looking for a first-date ice-breaker activity? Axe throwing might be exactly what you need. After opening successful urban axe-throwing warehouses in Sydney and Melbourne, Maniax Axe Throwing is coming to Brisbane, opening in Newstead on Saturday November 10. Offering games similar to darts, but with axes, Maniax is targeted to groups of eight or more, and even has competitive axe-throwing leagues starting soon. Solo players and date nights will also be welcome on specified nights, so you don’t need to gather a big group to get your axe fix.
