From news of a new inner-city cafe serving Vietnamese eats and coffee to a tasty collab from two of Australia’s dessert titans, The Weekend Edition is always on the search for the latest food news in Brisbane, dedicated to ensuring its readers are in the know. When we put our ears to the pavement this week, this is what we found out …

Black Drip Coffee
A new coffee spot with a Vietnamese twist is set to open in The City next month. Black Drip Coffee – the latest venture from the crew behind popular Algester noshery PAIISE Cafe – is currently taking shape on George Street in the 180-sqm space formerly home to Frankie & George (which has relocated across the street). GVU Architects and ENP FITOUTS are working on Black Drip Coffee’s design and build, respectively, with the team implementing a clean and minimal aesthetic across the interior and covered courtyard spaces. Much like at PAIISE Cafe, Black Drip Coffee will serve a hybrid menu encompassing Vietnamese and Australian-inspired dishes, starting with the likes of banh mis, noodle salads and rice-paper rolls. A hot display will be filled with an array of classic Aussie breakfast morsels, with time-poor city folk able to breeze through to make their own plate. On the caffeine front, Black Drip Coffee will be serving its own specialty blend via espresso alongside batch-brewed Vietnamese coffees for those looking for an extra-strong jolt. The cafe will also serve a clutch of specialty drinks like sugarcane juice and tiramisu lattes. You won’t have long to wait for Black Drip Coffee to open – the team is targeting early November for its official launch date. Be sure to follow along on socials for updates!

Yo-Chi x Tarts Anon
Australia’s fastest-growing frozen-yoghurt brand Yo-Chi is teaming up with one of Melbourne’s hottest pastry shops on a taste-bud-tantalising collab. Tarts Anon – the brainchild of Masterchef and Dessert Masters alumni Gareth Whitton and co-owner Catherine Way – has taken the Victorian capital by storm with its cult menu of crust-encased tarts. From Wednesday October 23, all Yo-Chi venues will offer Tarts Anon’s famous smoked pecan and butterscotch tart as a limited-edition addition to Yo-Chi’s signature buffet-style toppings bars. A riff on the classic pecan pie, the treat is composed of butterscotch caramel, pecan frangipane, toasted pecans and a smoky maple syrup glaze – a rich finisher to Yo-Chi’s range of silky soft-serve-style yoghurts. “This tart has real pecans on top and tastes like something out of a high-end restaurant,” says Yo-Chi brand partnerships leader, Ollie Allis. “It might even be one of the boujiest toppings we’ve ever included on the toppings bar.”

Gambaro Seafood Restaurant’s closure
In sad news for Brisbane’s high-end dining scene, Caxton Street icon Gambaro Seafood Restaurant and Function Centre is closing its doors on Thursday October 31, marking the end of a phenomenal innings that has spanned generations. The family-owned and operated restaurant (which launched as a humble fish and chip shop in 1953 before Michael Gambaro transformed it into a hospitality giant), has long been recognised as one of the city’s finest establishments. Over the years, the restaurant scored countless accolades for its seafood-centric offering and also earned a reputation as a place to be seen – hosting everyone from musicians (such as Dolly Parton, Ed Sheeran and The Doobie Brothers) and sporting icons to politicians (including former and current prime ministers). In a statement, the Gambaro family – John, Frank, Donny and their mother Joyce – extended a heartfelt thanks to their staff and long-time supporters, encouraging diners to visit their other venues, which include Black Hide Steak & Seafood at The Star Brisbane and Caxton Street, Persone Italian Restaurant at Brisbane Quarter, and their Gold Coast concepts Pipi’s Restaurant and Awaken Café.

Global Champagne Day at Howard Smith Wharves
Did you know that the fourth Friday of October is Global Champagne Day? In case you haven’t looked at a calendar lately, that’s this Friday. Keen to pop some bottles? We bet you are! So is the team at Howard Smith Wharves, which will be getting bubbly with its Global Champagne Day celebrations. From Wednesday to Sunday, Mr Percival’s, Felons Brewing Co., Felons Barrel Hall, the Rivergarden Lawn and Ciao Papi will be pouring a curated selection of champagnes – we’re talking Louis Roederer, Ruinart and Veuve Clicquot, to name a few – while also serving fresh, local seafood like $3 Sydney rock oysters. Greca, Yoko, Stanley and Stan’s Lounge will also boast dedicated champagne menus for the occasion. Meanwhile, the Main Lawn at Howard Smith Wharves will be transformed into Veuve Clicquot Garden – an immersive oasis with music, entertainment and, you guessed it, lots of champagne. The Veuve Clicquot Garden pop-up is free to enter and will be open from 4:00 pm to late on Thursday and Friday, and 12:00 pm to late over the weekend.
