Pavement Whispers: Vol 24 May 26
From whispers of bridge markets to high tea cafes, The Weekend Edition is always on the search for the latest news in Brisbane, dedicated to ensuring its readers are in the know. When we put our ears to the pavement this week, this is what we found out …
Story Bridge 75 Markets
The Story Bridge is turning 75 this year and to celebrate, the team behind the Eat Street Markets is hosting a birthday bash for the ages. On July 5 the iconic bridge will be closed off from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm for Story Bridge 75, an outdoor festival encompassing 1 km and all six lanes of the bridge. Four performance stages, four bars, 20 food trucks and more than 80 Eat Street vendors will be on hand to keep the expected crowd of 60,000 fed, watered and entertained alongside historical displays and Cycling Brisbane activations. Entry is free, but you must register for a ticket. Early-bird registrations have already been booked out, so your next chance to register will be on June 1.
Teneriffe Festival
Teneriffe Festival has been announced for another year, set for Saturday July 4 from 10:00 am to 9:00 pm. Now in its sixth year, the festival will take over the streets of the riverside suburb with street markets, food stalls, live music and historical displays. This year’s festival will feature the Tastes of Teneriffe once again, where local Teneriffe restaurants and cafes will be hosting special offers and events on the day. On the riverfront at Sir Manuel Hornibrook Park you’ll find the Mirvac River Stage with live entertainment as well as Green Beacon Brewing and Malt Pier, who are partnering to serve ice-cold beer and tasty morsels, and Newstead Brewing Co. with a pop-up bar.
Lucky Egg
Live music punters will already be well acquainted with the delicious grub available at The Brightside Kitchen, but the small dispensary will soon be branching out on its own when it transforms into Lucky Egg next month. Lucky Egg will be moving away from the toasted sandwich selection with an updated menu focusing on fried chicken burgers, wings and other goodies. While still based in The Brightside’s beer garden, Lucky Egg will be looking to entice more than live music punters to try the new menu.
Passiontree Velvet
High tea favourite Passiontree Velvet has announced a second Brisbane store to open in Indooroopilly Shopping Centre. The first store in Westfield Carindale has become a haven for sweet tooths, with the dessert cafe dishing up a colourful array of macarons, tartlets and other beautifully presented petit fours alongside light bites and more indulgent treats, such as Belgian waffles and chocolate fondue. The new store is set to open soon – look out on The Weekend Edition for more details.
Paper Daisy
Renowned Brisbane chef Ben Devlin has made his way down the coast, heading up the kitchen in Cabarita Beach’s Paper Daisy. Ben is much loved in Brisbane and will definitely be missed, formerly the head chef at Esquire before popping up around town with his own venture, Beerkary Bakery, and hosting Wandering Cook’s Friday Nite Snackdown events. Paper Daisy is part of new boutique hotel Halcyon House, and is named after the wild flowers that grow locally. The local focus doesn’t end there, with the menu heavily featuring local produce – expect dishes such as pippies with lemon myrtle, butter and warrigal greens, and grilled native crayfish with garlic and olive oil. Look out on The Weekend Edition: Gold Coast this week for full details.
