From whispers of James Street’s food laneway to a new neighbourhood bar, The Weekend Edition is always on the search for the latest news in Brisbane, dedicated to ensuring its readers are in the know. When we put our ears to the pavement this week, this is what we found out …
Ada Lane at The Calile Hotel
News surrounding James Street’s The Calile Hotel is coming in hard and fast. In last week’s Pavement Whispers we announced the hotel’s first confirmed restaurant, Hellenika Brisbane, its curated boutique offering the week prior, and today the news of a new dining micro-precinct. Over the coming months, James Street will be welcoming a number of new food and beverage operators both within The Calile (the first being Hellenika when the hotel opens in spring) and the adjoining Ada Lane development. The laneway is currently under construction between the hotel and the Pottery Barn building, and will connect James Street and Wandoo Street for both vehicles and pedestrians. Ada Lane’s street level will be home to five new eateries and bars, due to open in late 2018. Much like The Calile Hotel, the laneway’s moniker pays homage to owner/developer Michael Malouf’s ancestry – Calile and Ada were the family’s great grandparents, who set sail to Australia in 1892. Paddington is soon to welcome a friendly new resident to the neighbourhood. Little Social is set to open on June 4, taking over the space previously occupied by Yard Bird Ale House on Given Terrace. The eatery comes from Adam Barrack (Peasant), who has embraced a simple and honest philosophy for Little Social – somewhere people can feel like they are enjoying good food, booze and company at a friend’s place. Ex-Peasant sous chef Matthew Deem has come on board as head chef, creating a modern-Australian menu focusing on share plates and grazing boards, including sand crab and corn fritters, truffled pea and chorizo croquettes, charcuterie boards and lamb shanks. Little Social will open seven days, will all-day dining from 11:00 am until late Tuesday to Sunday.
Nostimo Restaurant & Bar
Just in time for this weekend’s Paniyiri Greek Festival, The Greek Club has announced news of its soon-to-open signature restaurant, Nostimo Restaurant & Bar. Nostimo will welcome acclaimed Sydney-based Greek chef David Tsirekas as its chef in residence when it opens on June 20, who will be bringing his signature approach to the restaurant and drawing upon techniques he’s honed in his role as executive chef at Sydney’s 1821. Although he will be splitting his time between Sydney and Brisbane, David will work closely with the Nostimo culinary team to share his vision and visit the restaurant every month. The restaurant will present a modern interpretation of a traditional Greek dining experience – expect to find signature dishes such as zesty barbecued swordfish kalamaki skewers on a bed of traditional black-eye bean fasolada soup. Nostimo Restaurant & Bar will open as part of The Greek Club’s mammoth $3-million renovation, seating 75 diners inside the restaurant and 85 on the terrace.
Jessie’s Girl breakfast and lunch
Petrie Terrace’s Jessie’s Girl has become rather renowned for its evening spritzes and shareable eats, and will soon be extending its trade to please palates all day. The end of this month will see the eatery open from 7:00 am to 3:00 pm Tuesday to Sunday, serving up breakfast, lunch and everything in between. Lovers of Jessie’s Girl’s sister venue will be pleased to hear the daytime offering will include two Scout favourites – Coffee Supreme and that drool-worthy thick-cut bacon. Expect to find the likes of jalapeno and cheddar croquettes with poached eggs, bacon, and rocket and herb salad, and snapper ceviche with avocado, sesame, ginger oil, sorrel and grapefruit. Jessie’s Girl will still be open for dinner Wednesday to Saturday – don’t worry, Wednesday Jazz, Soul, Beer & Parmi nights aren’t going anywhere.
