Pavement Whispers: Vol 13 March 3

From whispers of new burger joints to pop-up boutiques, The Weekend Edition is always on the search for the latest news in Brisbane, dedicated to ensuring its readers are in the know. When we put our ears to the pavement this week, this is what we found out …

Chur Express
It’s a weekly struggle – Chur Burger in Fortitude Valley is just too far away for hungry city workers to get their weekday burger fix. A solution has finally arrived, in the shape of Chur Express. The quicker, simpler sibling of the Fortitude Valley burger joint will be satisfying grumbling tummies at Riverside on Eagle Street as of April, serving up a pared-back menu of five different gourmet burgers for breakfast and lunch Monday through to Friday.

Friday Nite Snackdown
Lovers of interesting nosh, local brews and a relaxed after-work setting are in for a treat this Friday March 6 as the very first Friday Nite Snackdown takes place at Wandering Cooks in South Brisbane. Brisbane chef Ben Devlin is masterminding weekly culinary battles from 4:00 pm every Friday, with the first edition ‘Samurai vs Viking’ seeing Japanese and Danish street food fighting it out for top position. Punters can purchase tokens for $4 each and choose from a range of affordable plates from $4–12. Make sure you read The Weekend Edition this Thursday for more details on the exciting new food event series.

Fresh Food Monthly Market Day
Those looking to combine their weekend grocery shop with a dip into a shopping centre for those little extras will soon be able to do so with the launch of Fresh Food Monthly Market Day at Westfield Garden City this Saturday March 7. Held on the first Saturday of every month, the regular market days will feature cooking demonstrations, food samples and chats with health food experts.

Mister Paganini
2014 saw several new eateries added to the South Bank dining scene, and that trend is set to continue in 2015 with the addition of Mister Paganini on Grey Street. The Italian bar, restaurant and deli will take over the space formerly occupied by Poppy’s Basket and is set to open in June. Look out on The Weekend Edition for updates closer to its proposed opening date.

Junky Comics
Stocking some of the coolest indie comics and graphic novels from around the world, Junky Comics has quickly become a popular resource for those seeking some alternative reading material. Until now, you could only find Junky Comics online or at boutique markets in Brisbane, but news has arrived that Junky Comics will be opening its very own store on Vulture Street in West End at the end of March, with a launch party scheduled for April 10.

We Are Kindred Pop-Up Shop
Sydney sisters Lizzie and Georgie Renkert are bringing their label We Are Kindred up to Brisbane. The girls will be showcasing their new autumn/winter 2015 collection Winter Garden in a special pop-up shop at 5A, 46 James Street in Fortitude Valley from March 2–29. The 20-square-metre store will be full of whimsy, the feature being a floral wreath filled with fresh roses and eucalyptus. Illustrator Ellie Anderson will also create a bespoke artwork on the front window, reflecting the wreath inside the store.
