Pavement Whispers: Volume 213 March 12

From whispers of a new cafe from the Miss Jones crew to Gelato Messina’s second Brisbane location, The Weekend Edition is always on the search for the latest news in Brisbane, dedicated to ensuring its readers are in the know. When we put our ears to the pavement this week, this is what we found out …

Fans of Brunswick Street’s pastel-hued stunner Miss Jones will soon have a new reason to jump for joy – the charming cafe is set to welcome a sibling into the world. Sister is the name of the new joint from Daniel and Hannah Bowles, who have spent the past few years conquering the New Farm cafe scene with Little Loco (now sold to new owners) and Miss Jones. The couple has tabbed the leafy suburb of Hawthorne for their latest venture, recently commencing fit-out ahead of a mid-May opening. Like Miss Jones, Sister will have a casual-cool feel complete with a fun aesthetic of peach and lavender tones. In terms of the plated fare, dishes will also boast a strong visual identity akin to Miss Jones’ mouth-watering menu, but expect a fresh array of all-day breakfast and lunch dishes to choose from alongside Single O coffee. We’ll have a closer look for you once Sister opens to the public in a couple of months.

Gelato Messina Fortitude Valley
Speaking of exciting expansions, famed dessert outfit Gelato Messina is also adding to its family, opening a second Brisbane location off James Street later this month. Gelato Messina is bringing a Palm Springs aesthetic to the Richards and Spence-designed Ada Lane precinct near The Calile Hotel, tucked in next to the newly opened Jocelyn’s Provisions. Messina’s signature and rotating experimental flavours will be available, kept cool in newfangled gelato cabinets (the second location in the country to have them), which eschew the prototypically mounded piles of gelato in favour of chic sunken tubs. Expect Gelato Messina’s Fortitude Valley location to open in mid-to-late March.

Salt Meats Cheese South Bank
Purveyor of primo pizza and pasta Salt Meats Cheese is maintaining its upward trajectory, building upon the momentum of its West Village addition with news of another restaurant slated for South Bank. In partnership with Accor Hotels, Salt Meats Cheese will open a new outlet at the base of Mantra South Bank (the former home of Stone Restaurant and Bar) later this month. Featuring more than 100 seats across interior and al fresco dining areas, Salt Meats Cheese will boast the laid-back European aesthetic of its sibling locations, as well as menu items and cocktails created specifically for South Bank. The new Grey Street location will offer 24-hour service to Mantra guests, including a grazing-style buffet breakfast and grab-and-go bites for tourists with busy schedules. Keep your eye on The Weekend Edition for a detailed overview later this month.
