Pavement Whispers: Volume 125 June 6

From whispers of inner-city fromageries and architecturally designed bars, The Weekend Edition is always on the search for the latest news in Brisbane, dedicated to ensuring its readers are in the know. When we put our ears to the pavement this week, this is what we found out …

The Cheese Pleaser
Nothing can pull us out of a sour mood quite like some good cheese. Whether it is hard, soft, crumbly or creamy, cheese is our go-to mood brightener. The Cheese Pleaser has been putting smiles on dials with its range of cheese hampers and mind-melting cheese toasties, and is now set to unveil the happiest place on earth – its very own grab-and-go cafe and delicatessen. This fromagerie will open within the next three to four weeks on Adelaide Street in The City, and will offer restaurant-quality dishes for takeaway, as well as a curated selection of cheeses and charcuterie morsels. This means you’ll soon be able to stop by for a toastie and a coffee on the run, or something a bit heartier to make your co-workers jealous. Keep your eye on The Weekend Edition for more details in the coming weeks.

The Cloakroom Bar
When it comes to donning dashing attire, dapper dudes and gentlemen across Brisbane have always relied on The Cloakroom on Elizabeth Street to bring the goods. Now The Cloakroom’s tailored experience is about to get a new component when The Cloakroom Bar opens in the coming months. With an approach similar to The Cloakroom’s Montreal-based sibling Maison Cloakroom, the Brisbane boutique will soon be opening a 35-seater cocktail lounge-style bar separate to the showroom, accessible by the side alley and back stairs. Don’t expect to find a menu here – patrons will be offered to take a seat at the bar and chat with the skilled bartender who will create a bespoke cocktail especially for them. We’ll have more details for you soon.

Quincy’s Bar and Cafe
When opening a new bar or cafe, sourcing a great selection of eats and beverages is only half the battle. The space and the vibe one cultivates is also crucially important to any venue, which is why our ears perked up when we caught wind of a new bar that purposefully pairs its offering with architectural flair. Base Architecture director Shawn Godwin is the brains behind Quincy’s Bar and Cafe – a Grange-based haunt that is inspired by the famous Los Angeles architect Archibald Quincy Jones. The site has been purpose-built underneath the Base Architecture building, with 190 cubic metres dug out to house the stylish bar. Quincy’s will be launching on Friday June 16 and will be serving barista-brewed coffee, high-quality spirits, craft beers and boutique wines.

Italian Street Kitchen
If we had to pick one cuisine to eat exclusively for the rest of our lives, we’d probably pick Italian. A new eatery is about to hit the scene, promising contemporary and classic Roman street food made from fresh ingredients. Italian Street Kitchen will open at Gasworks Plaza on Monday June 12, offering bites such as roasted pumpkin arancini, protein cooked over a spit roast, plus plenty of pizza and pasta to boot. Check The Weekend Edition next week for a closer look!

Slipstream Brewing
Brisbane’s craft brewing scene has been on a roll lately, with numerous boutique operations popping up all over town. The latest brewery to start filling kegs is Slipstream Brewing, a Yeerongpilly-based operation that is launching its range this Thursday at The Scratch in Milton. From 5:00 pm punters will be able to sample four of Slipstream’s core range, which includes a German pilsner, Vermont-style IPA, rye pale ale and an XPA, as well as a seasonal American brown ale. The night will also feature lucky door prizes of growlers and squealers and deals on beer flights. Keep your eye on Slipstream Brewing’s socials for details on its growler fill station and on-site cellar door. We are hopping with excitement!

Big Roddy’s ten-buck burger
If you haven’t taken the time to introduce yourself to Big Roddy and the team at his Rippin’ Rib Shack, you aren’t living your best life. Thankfully, Big Rod is a forgiving man – so much so that he is adding ten-buck burgers to his lunch menu from Monday through to Thursday every week. That’s right, for a tenner you can sink your teeth into the likes of Roddy’s signature ribwich, a pulled-pork burger, cheeseburgers or fried chicken burger. To celebrate this insane bargain, Big Roddy’s Rippin’ Rib Shack will be giving away 50 free ten-buck burgers from 11:30 am today. Talk about generosity!
