From news of the vendors that will be slinging bites at the new-look Brisbane Night Noodle Markets to South Bank’s forthcoming omakase-style Japanese restaurant and bar, The Weekend Edition is always on the search for the latest food news in Brisbane, dedicated to ensuring its readers are in the know. When we put our ears to the pavement this week, this is what we found out …

Brisbane Night Noodle Markets
After a year-long hiatus, beloved fixture of the foodie calendar Brisbane Night Noodle Markets is set to return in July as part of Brisbane Good Food Month. This year the markets will sprawl out at a new location at the Botanic Gardens, bringing together a host of delicious eats from Wednesday July 21 to Sunday August 1. Much like previous years, the markets will offer a mouth-watering mixture of multicultural flavours, with the hawker-style wonderland offering tantalising tastes of pan-Asian fare from local and national stallholders. Joining the fold this year is Thai fusion roti wrap slingers Schillykickk, South Asian specialists Stone & Copper Curry and Snack Bar, beloved burger bandits Hashtag Burgers & Waffles, and iconic gluten-free treat makers Nodo Donuts, which will be serving a range of sundaes and whips to hungry market goers. Other must-try bites include Tokyo tacos and Japanese fried dumplings from Donburi Station, Filipino BBQ street food from Hoy Pinoy, Korean chicken gua bao from Everyday Bao, and HK French Toast and mango pancakes from Gelato Messina. This year the Brisbane Night Noodle Markets will also offer plenty of sudsy sips from Gage Roads Brewing Co and Heaps Normal, and will also give one lucky attendee the chance to win a luxurious Japan cruise holiday for two. Like previous years, the event is free to enter, however guests will need to register for a free ticket online. Head to the Event Guide for more info!

TakashiYa
Chef Takashi Nami’s ambitious omakase-style sushi degustation restaurant Shishou caused a stir in 2019 when it opened on Brunswick Street in Fortitude Valley. Although short-lived, the intimate multi-course eatery proved that the bespoke form of dining it championed had a place in Brisbane’s dining scene. Takashi’s heralded fare will take centre stage once again at his new culinary concept TakashiYa, which is set to open in mid August at the base of South Bank’s Emporium Hotel. TakashiYa will be a venue of two halves – a 24-seat casual-dining space and bar, and a separate VIP 12-seat omakase room. TakashiYa’s bar will be the spot to enjoy top-shelf Japanese sake and whiskies, as well as a rotating menu of eats including fried wagyu chateaubriand sandos with foie gras dressing, sashimi tasting boxes (filled with blue fin tuna, kingfish, salmon, scallops and Tasmanian sea urchin) and black-miso-glazed tiger prawns. The private omakase room will offer two sessions per night – one short-course and one long-course sitting – showcasing Takashi’s artfully assembled morsels such as grilled miso-glazed Glacier 51 toothfish and fried Moreton Bay bug and Tasmanian sea urchin wrapped in shiso leaf. Reservations will go live next month ahead of TakashiYa’s August opening – stay tuned for more details!

Kings
The posters have only just dried on the walls of California Lane nightspot Queens and already the team behind it has announced the forthcoming arrival of its sibling joint Kings. Last week owner Kyle Weir revealed the initial details of the concept, which will be taking over the laneway space previously occupied by The Stand. Like Queens, Kings will boast an aesthetic predicated on colour – think an amalgam of cyberpunk, lofi, 1980s LA, and tropical themes, plus plenty of purple, pink and blue hues, palm trees, chequered tablecloths and a jukebox. Kings’ booze offering will focus more heavily on cocktails, with a dedicated margarita menu offering between six and eight varieties alongside a slimmed down range of natural wines. Food is also likely to feature, with a neighbouring commercial kitchen space used to serve a selection of tacos and po’ boys. An existing stage will be used to host drag shows, gigs for local bands, DJs and more. Keep your eyes peeled for more on Kings when it opens in early July.
