From fledgling market venture to inner city grab-and-go outlet to a bricks-and-mortar institution, it’s been a long journey for cult-favourite burger joint Charboys Burgers. Since 2017, Charboys has been slinging a choice menu of juicy burgs from its bright-red shipping container home on Edward Street, a spot that was always intended to be a temporary stop-gap before evolving once more. Inner-city burger lovers will be crushed to know that Charboys Burgers in The City has closed, but within six-to-eight weeks it will re-emerge in Bulimba as a permanent fixture. Charboys Burgers’ owner Shravan Gautam has been on the hunt for a forever home since early 2018, passing up other offers in order to find the perfect spot. Charboys Burgers will soon open on Bulimba’s bustling Oxford Street strip, bringing with it its hugely popular menu of crispy golden fries, succulent cheeseburgers, fried-chicken burgers, lentil-patty burgers and more. Shrav will be keeping the menu simple to start, but will be introducing milkshakes and beer to the offering at launch. Burger-loving punters that visit the new location can also expect plenty of room to move, with ample seating space surrounded by an inviting aesthetic imbued with an earthy and natural vibe. With construction of Gurner’s high-profile FV No.1 residential development and adjoining multi-level hospitality hub Foresters Restaurant & Bar and Altitude at Foresters nearing completion, the corner of Alfred and Brunswick Street in Fortitude Valley is currently a buzzing hive of activity. Joining these arrivals in the next couple of months is Baja – a forthcoming eatery from Daniel Quinn, the mind behind Milk Box Coffee & Tuckshop. Inspired by Cali-Mex cuisine, Baja will look to showcase a healthier side of Mexican fare, with traditional flavours realised using seasonal Queensland produce (think Moreton Bay bug tacos). Diners can expect Baja to plate up an array of dishes inspired by the culinary scene of its geographical namesake, which includes party capital Tijuana, Valle de Guadalupe’s lush wine regions and the coastal hub of Endenada – the ancestral home of the fish taco. Baja’s aesthetic design (and fit-out helmed by Woodsters) will be minimal but warm, with pops of green and terracotta scattered across the bar, large group tables and banquette seating on the fringe. Darren Robertson, Mark Labrooy and Andy Allen have created a menu that showcases the best of the region’s producers and sustainably sourced seafood, as well as Byron-esque cocktails and sundowners soundtracked by a live DJ. Tsuru Japanese turns ten
To find some of Brisbane’s best dining spots, one need only look towards the ‘burbs – and the proof is in local institution Tsuru Japanese. The Ashgrove restaurant is celebrating its tenth birthday this month, cementing its status as a beloved community staple in the inner west. Tsuru will be hosting a week-long party to spread the love to locals and visitors alike, adorning its space with 100 white lanterns from June 27 to July 2. Over the course of the week you can expect to take part in free gyoza-making classes, share a 20kg sushi cake, sample free coffee and loads more.
