Pavement Whispers: Volume 79 July 5
From whispers of new craft breweries to Greek loaded fries, The Weekend Edition is always on the search for the latest news in Brisbane, dedicated to ensuring its readers are in the know. When we put our ears to the pavement this week, this is what we found out …
Newstead Brewing Co. Milton
You may have heard the whispers – Newstead Brewing Co. is planning to open a second location in Milton! Due to open early 2017, the craft brewery will be located across the road from Suncorp Stadium on Castlemaine Street. While the team is still waiting on final council approvals, the plan is to start construction in August. The Milton brewery will have a similar offering to its Newstead sibling, however co-owner Michael Conrad has assured us it will have its own personality, with a few unique offerings in the works. Keep an eye on The Weekend Edition for updates!
The Apo
Changes are in store for Moubment Group’s The Apo, with head chef Braden White leaving the restaurant and bar due to creative differences. But don’t stress food lovers – the restaurant is in safe hands. Ben Williamson has been appointed to oversee the menu (in addition to his head chef role at Gerard’s Bistro and Gerard’s Bar & Charcuterie), with his new offering available as of July 12. Expect something very different to Gerard’s – The Apo will take a modern approach to French-style food with Lebanese influences.
The Yiros Shop
If you’re working in The City and sitting at your desk right now thinking “damn, I wish I could get me some yiros next week”, then we are about to make all your dreams come true. With locations already in Fortitude Valley, South Bank and Cannon Hill, The Yiros Shop is set to open its fourth store on Edward Street in Brisbane City. Due to open early next week, the City store will offer all of the usual mouth-watering flavours, as well as a few newbies such as lamb and rocket with beetroot, fetta, chips and tzatziki, new salads, and Greek-topped chips loaded with delicious Greek-style meat and sauce. We’ll keep you posted!
James Street Food & Wine Trail
Foodies, listen up! The annual James Street Food & Wine Trail has just been announced for July 30–31. Now in its fifth year, the culinary celebration will take over a portion of the street for the first time, with food offerings from local chefs presented beneath the fig-tree-lined promenade between McLachlan and Robertson Streets. In addition to pop-up bars, markets and cooking demonstrations, James Street’s restaurants will be plating signature dishes across the entire weekend, with special food and drink pairings for $30. Look out on The Weekend Edition for more details soon.
Markets on the Lawn
Greenslopes is about to get its own market, with Markets on the Lawn due to launch on Sunday July 31. The markets will offer an outdoor farmers market – think fresh fruit and veg, artisan bread, smokehouse salami and hand-cut flowers – as well as arts and craft stalls, clothing and more. Oh, and there will be food. Let your mouth water over the idea of injectable doughnuts and cronuts, Turkish gozleme, Hungarian langos, and a stall dedicated entirely to potatoes and all kinds of fries – loaded, curly, sweet, waffle and more. Markets on the Lawn will continue each Sunday from 8:00 am to 1:00 pm in the cooler months, located at Greenslopes State School.
