From news of a new inner-city location for Malt Traders to a soulful salad bar and sandwich joint from the Lina Rooftop team, The Weekend Edition is always on the search for the latest food news in Brisbane, dedicated to ensuring its readers are in the know. When we put our ears to the pavement this week, this is what we found out …

Soul Green
There’s never been a better time to be a salad lover in Brisbane. Over in South Brisbane, the team behind Lina Rooftop, Mina Italian and Evita will open artisanal deli and salad bar Soul Green at the base of the Mobo Co building on Tribune Street. The concept, which looks to improve access to everyday essentials and fresh, organic salads for office workers, will offer much more than your run-of-the-mill salad dispensary. Soul Green will offer a range of Asian-inspired customisable salads, with vegan- and vegetarian-friendly options (made using Queensland produce and bases like brown rice or soba noodles) personalised with an assortment of proteins (including the likes of jackfruit, tempeh, chicken and salmon) and sauces. The concept will also offer a range of fresh wraps and sandwiches (including pastrami-filled Reubens and egg-and-bacon rolls for the breakfast crowd), alongside detoxifying juices and smoothies, matcha lattes, muffins, croissants, cronuts, and specialty coffee. Patrons can take away their order (and those working in Mobo Co and have their order delivered to their desk via QR code ordering), though a small amount of seating inside and out will be on hand for folks to dine in, if desired. Soul Green at Mobo Co is expected to be the first in a potential string of locations. It’s on track to open in late-August or early-September – stay tuned for more details soon!

Malt Traders Heritage Lanes
The brains behind Malt Dining, Malt Pier, Drum and Vaquero is set to expand its hospitality portfolio with the forthcoming opening of a brand-new Malt Traders location at blossoming precinct Heritage Lanes. The purveyor of craft beer, fine wine and boutique whisky, which boasts locations on Market Street and over the river in South Bank, is doubling its presence in The City with the new Ann Street location, which will open in mid-August next to Mumbleberry Providore. Much like its sibling sites, Malt Traders Heritage Lanes will double as both a bottle shop and bar. Inner-city denizens will be free to pop in to pick up a bottle of something nice for home consumption, or drink their selection on site. This location will differ, however, thanks to the addition of a small beer-garden space at the end of the laneway, giving the venue a total seating capacity of 50. Though the new location will offer the same eclectic mix of quality booze as Market Street and South Bank (with a sharp focus on smaller brewers, distillers and wine makers), the team is expected to tailor the selection based on local market demand. Those drinking on site will be free to BYO food from other Heritage Lanes vendors.

Gather Bistro
Joining Malt Traders at Heritage Lanes will be Gather Bistro, a large-scale bar and eatery from the Brisbane Cafe Group (Weekday, Public Cafe, Ann Street Coffee Project). The restaurant is currently taking shape underneath the building’s podium lobby, with a glazed-glass interior shielding the interior from the street. Inside, Unita is currently working on the fit-out, implementing a design crafted by Angela Spillane from Studio Spillane boasting recycled concrete, earthy stone, brass and pops of pink. Gather Bistro will house a cafe offering grab-and-go options and Five Senses coffee, while the bistro’s semi-open kitchen will turn out modern-Australian dishes and the bar will dispense a neat selection of wine and beer. Gather Bistro is targeting a September opening – you can read more about it here.

Hub Brewing
Sad news for Geebung-based lovers of craft beer – last week the team at Hub Brewing announced that the beloved Morrisby Street all-grain brewery will be calling last drinks on Sunday August 14. In a statement posted to Hub Brewing’s website, owners Chris and Linda cited a desire to restore their work-life balance as a key contributor to their decision to shut up shop. The team has sold the building to a new owner, who will not be continuing the brewing practice. As such, the Hub Brewing team is selling off a whole range of brewing equipment (including 50-litre Braumeister tanks and fermenters), furniture, glassware and more. The full list of what’s available can be seen on the Hub Brewing website.
