From whispers of Brisbane City’s latest restaurant to Billykart West End’s new burger bar, The Weekend Edition is always on the search for the latest news in Brisbane, dedicated to ensuring its readers are in the know. When we put our ears to the pavement this week, this is what we found out …
Brisbane City’s former Restaurant Two space will soon be brought back to life, when Walter’s Steakhouse opens its doors in mid-March. Walter’s comes from hospitality group DAP & Co, the combined minds of Denis Sheahan (DSEM Event Management), Andrew Baturo (Libertine and Bar Jardin) and Paul Piticco (Splendour in the Grass, Falls Festival, etc.), who are also behind The Gresham, Popolo and Heya Bar. Steak has always been a passion for the trio, with the dream to open a steakhouse from the beginning, but they’ve been waiting to find the ideal location to bring it to fruition. Walter’s promises to be unlike any other steakhouse and will focus on quality of product rather than a specific region to source its beef, with chef Adam Herbert cutting and dry ageing the steaks in house. An impressive bar will occupy roughly one quarter of the space on the Edward Street side, with The Gresham’s Brendon Osmers overseeing the drinks list.
Billykart West End is soon to get a laid-back younger sibling, which is taking shape next door in the former Billykart Provisions space. Billykart Bar is due to open in the coming days and will serve up a selection of burgers alongside a small-but-fun wine list, craft beers, bottled cocktails and beer cocktails made in the can. The opening menu will include the famed Billykart cheeseburger, as well as a pulled-pork slider, fried chicken sandwich and next-level veggie burger – think mac ‘n’ cheese-stuffed field mushroom, cheese fondue, cos lettuce and tomato relish on a milk bun. Small eats of parmesan and truffle fries, spicy chicken wings, mac ‘n’ cheese bites and jamon croquettes will also feature, and the menu will expand in the next few weeks to include deli-style Reuben and Cubano sandwiches, a signature burger and a Philly cheesesteak. Bloody Lovely Pop-up Bar
Ever dreamt up your own imaginary dive bar, where the beers flow, the music pumps and you can shoot the breeze with your mates over a game of pool? The guys from DZ Deathrays have, and to celebrate the release of their new album Bloody Lovely this Friday (you may have already heard it as triple j’s Feature Album this week), they are doing it. The Bloody Lovely Pop-up Bar will take over Fortitude Valley’s Greaser on Friday February 2 for one night only, bringing to life the imaginary bar depicted on the album cover. DZ Deathrays will be hanging out at the bar, playing a DJ set and making sure that the vibe is as wild and divey as they envisioned. The band has also teamed up with Young Henrys once again to launch a re-brew of their Pills ‘N’ Thrills Pilsner, which will be available on the night, as well as exclusive merch such as a limited-edition pink pressing of Bloody Lovely on vinyl. The Buddha Group
Gold Coast-based hospitality group The Buddha Group has set its sights on Brisbane, with plans to open five new venues in the coming months. Mid-February will see two new eateries for the recently revamped Newmarket Village – South American-style Charr’d Charcoal Cooked Grill, specialising in organic free-range charcoal rotisserie chicken, and Pomodoro, serving woodfired pizza and pasta. By the end of April the group plans to open a second Charr’d on Brisbane City’s Wharf Street, as well as gourmet toasted sandwich bar Jaffles HQ. Finally, in mid-May, its signature restaurant and bar Happy Buddha is due to open at The Barracks.
