Pavement Whispers: Volume 257 January 28

From news of a new location for a beloved wing crew to a collaborative dinner featuring a Sunshine Coast icon, The Weekend Edition is always on the search for the latest news in Brisbane, dedicated to ensuring its readers are in the know. When we put our ears to the pavement this week, this is what we found out …

Wing Fix Coorparoo Square
The Wing Fix story is one of incremental successes. After earning a cult following with their chicken-wing slingin’ market stall food truck, Peter and Ross Jacobi opened their first bricks-and-mortar Wing Fix location in Morningside in March last year. As of September, the duo had expanded the Morningside location to cater for the huge demand – increasing seating capacity from 14 seats to more than 30. Now, almost a year on from the arrival of their first eatery, Peter and Ross are gearing up to open their second, snagging a sizeable location in the heart of Coorparoo Square. Wing Fix will be opening in early March in the former home of Saffron Indian Restaurant – a 140-sqm space that will give the boys plenty of room to experiment moving forward. In addition to Wing Fix’s established menu of wings (which come in six flavours), burgers (eight kinds) and sides (chicken tenders and chilli-cheese fries), the Coorparoo Square location will also be selling some seriously decadent thick-shakes, with flavours including Nutella and Reese’s Pieces. Expect Wing Fix’s much-loved weekly specials (including Tuesday $10 burgers deals and Wednesday’s 20 wings for $20), as well as a selection of craft beers. We’ll have a closer look at this hotspot once it opens in early March.

Smokey Moo
Fans of lovingly smoked meat and tender barbecued morsels are probably already well acquainted with Smokey Moo – the humble barbecue hotspot that opened in East Brisbane back in 2018. After nearly two years of smoking, curing and carving, owners Shalom and Wensley Bitton are upgrading. Over the long weekend, the couple announced to its social-media followers that Smokey Moo would be moving to Newstead’s Gasworks, opening in a fresh space in just under two months time. Situated at the far end of the precinct’s new dining arm (close to Mecca Bah and Milky Lane), Smokey Moo’s new home will boast room for more than 100 patrons, a gargantuan increase from their poky Lytton Road nook. Expect an array of beef cuts (lovingly smoked over an assortment of woods), served alongside a new drinks menu, which will feature a curated selection of beers, wines and cocktails. Start salivating – Smokey Moo will open at Gasworks in early March.

Old Skool Barbecue
Speaking of mouth-watering barbecue, Deception Bay will soon be the recipient of a meaty joint of its own as of this weekend. The brainchild of pitmaster Chris Worthington, Old Skool Barbeque is a 60-seater BYO-friendly eatery specialising in woodfired smoked meats – the kind carefully cooked low’n’slow style until it’s fit to melt in your mouth. The menu will feature the likes of Chris’ Pitmaster Platter – piled high with ten-hour smoked brisket, pork, jalapeno and cheese sausages, and sides – brisket cheeseburgers, pulled-pork burgers, and a double-ground brisket smash burger. Come 5:30 pm this Saturday February 1, Old Skool Barbecue will be celebrating its official launch with live music from blues and roots artist Dan Hannaford. Head along for a bite and a boogie!

Sum Yung Guys x One Fish Two Fish
Kangaroo Point seafood destination One Fish Two Fish has announced the fourth instalment of its Red Fish Blue Fish collaboration series, this time revealing that Matt Sinclair from acclaimed Sunshine Coast restaurant Sum Yung Guys will be joining Daniel Miletic for a one-day banquet-style feast on Saturday February 22. The day will be split into two sittings, one from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm and the second between 2:30–4:30 pm. Guests will be treated to a Sum Yung Guys crafted cocktail before tucking into the likes of king-prawn toast with sesame gochu mayo, yellowtail kingfish ceviche spring rolls, sweet pork cheek with Vietnamese mint and sugarloaf, Thai green curry with spanner crab, and fresh Queensland fruit and coconut sorbet. Tickets are $125 – make sure you nab one here before they are snatched up!
